“Fifty Shades of Grey” movie favorite Ashley Benson once said that she would love to play Anastasia Steele. So have her feelings changed about starring in the movie based on E. L. James’ best-selling erotic novel? According to a May 24 report by Wetpaint, now Ashley doesn’t sound quite as confident about wanting to get cast as Ana.
Here’s what the “Spring Breakers” star said when she was asked about the “Fifty Shades” movie: “Oh, man. I’ve been linked to that movie so many times. It’s so funny. I don’t know. It depends. It might be a bit of a stretch. I don’t know if I could do all that.”
Benson might be a bit uneasy about the idea of filming some of the very explicit sex scenes detailed in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” book, but she has shown that she can be a bit bold when it comes to crazy sex scenes — she did get topless and partake in a threesome with Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco in “Spring Breakers.” However, the actress went on to say this about her feelings about “Fifty Shades”: “I loved the book. I mean amazing, great. I read all three books in a week, but the movie, I mean reading it and doing it is completely different.”
So it sounds like Ashley Benson is definitely having second thoughts about wanting to play Anastasia Steele. She also said that she’s currently looking into numerous other projects to work on when she’s not busy with “Pretty Little Liars,” and she describes them as “very edgy and raw, organic.” So with Ashley pretty much out of the running for the role, who does this leave?
Mila Kunis and Emma Watson have both said that they aren’t interested, and it’s hard to imagine fan favorite Alexis Bledel signing on for the role since she’s about a decade too old for the part and has never done nude scenes. She’s also busy with her new Fox series “Gavin & Stacey.” Ashley Benson’s “Pretty Little Liars” costar Lucy Hale once said that she would also love to play Ana, but perhaps she’s also having second thoughts after seeing so many actresses shun the role.
The best woman for the job still might be “Game of Thrones” beauty Emilia Clarke, but the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie producers need to act fast if they want to sign the popular star. She’s set to work with Ashley’s “Spring Breakers” costar James Franco on a movie called “The Garden of Last Days,” and she and “Girls” actress Allison Williams are in talks to star in “Rosaline.” It’s a rethinking of “Romeo & Juliet” that’s told through the eyes of Romeo’s jilted first love named Rosaline. Williams would play the titular character, while Emilia would be Juliet. James Franco’s brother Dave is in talks to play Romeo.
So with other interesting projects like “Rosaline” popping up and catching the eye of Anastasia Steele favorites like Emilia Clarke, it’s looking like the producers might end up with slim pickings for the part. Are you still hopeful that Emilia will sign on to play Ana, or do you think that she’s probably getting too many other intriguing offers since “Game of Thrones” has made her such a hot commodity right now?
