The Lying Game may not be slated to air this summer on ABC Family, but Blair Redford fans will get a special dose of him on Switched at Birth, the show that introduced him to that audience. The guy who grew up with Daphne (Katie Leclerc) but caught Bay’s (Vanessa Marano) eye shipped out to war in the storyline so the actor could taking a more leading role in the other ABC Family drama. Enough time has passed, though, that the character has already completed his first tour, and that means he heads home, at least for a little while, in the second season summer premiere episode “Mother and Child Divided.”
Bay runs into Ty again when her car breaks down just outside the “Maui, Kansas” carnvial. She has 45 minutes to kill, so she heads inside and tries her hand at a shooting game. She’s having no luck until a disembodied voice tells her exactly where and when to aim and shoot. When she turns around, it’s Ty, back from Afghanistan. Clearly he has picked up a few skills (and has a new look) but he has also developed a new edge. Later in the episode, he lashes out against some other guys who are making fun of Bay, as well as his relationship with Bay, and it’s clear he may have come home in one physical piece, but the Ty Bay knew and loved isn’t completely still intact.
What does this mean for their relationship? Bay is newly single– again. And she has already begun flirting with a couple of new boys– again. But Ty may just be the “one that got away” for her. Will she be able to handle this “new” Ty that has returned to her life?
Also in the summer premiere episode, while Regina (Constance Marie) has been away at rehab, Daphne has grown closer to the Kennish family, spending her days at their country club and her nights in their guest room. This new family dynamic does not sit well with Regina, who unexpectedly returns home early in hopes of spending more time with Daphne. Meanwhile, Travis (Ryan Lane) talks Emmett (Sean Berdy) into bringing some girls over to the house while Melody (Marlee Matlin) is out of town, and Kathryn’s (Lea Thompson) elaborate ideas for Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Nikki’s (Cassi Thompson) rehearsal dinner rubs Nikki the wrong way.
Switched at Birth returns to ABC Family on June 10 2013 at 8 p.m.
