The First Tee of Metropolitan New York (TFTMNY) has launched its $5 million Campaign for the Next 10 to fund the growth and expansion of its youth development program over the next decade. The First Tee features a unique life skills curriculum for children ages 5-18, teaching positive values such as honesty, integrity and perseverance through the game of golf at locations throughout the Metropolitan area and currently serves more than 5,000 youth annually.
Chaired by Michael Rudin and Douglas Band, the Campaign Committee also includes TFTMNY Trustees Leonard Wilf, Kenneth Whitney and Kevin Ryan, along with Barry Hyde, Scott Seymour and Mark Hissey. Several major commitments have already been made to the Campaign totaling more than a million dollars to date, with the goal of completing the Campaign by the end of 2014. These supporters include The Heckscher Foundation for Children, Morgan Stanley, Wasserman Foundation, General Motors, New York Yankees as well as several other major foundation and corporate sponsors.
“The First Tee is about so much more than golf, and provides the youth in the program with positive role models and a safe place to learn and grow,” said Rudin. “Through the successful completion of this Campaign, we will be able to provide these opportunities to thousands more young people in the years to come.”
Founded in 2001 by the Rudin Family, Metropolitan Golf Association and Met Section PGA, The First Tee of Metropolitan New York has grown into one of the largest and most successful Chapters of this national program. In addition to its headquarters at Mosholu Golf Course in the Bronx, TFTMNY serves young people at facilities on Long Island, Newark and Plainfield in New Jersey and Fairfield County, Connecticut.
“We are very thankful to the Trustees and supporters who have already committed to the Campaign, and for introducing friends and colleagues to join us in this effort,” said Barry McLaughlin, TFTMNY Executive Director. “By making this investment in youth through The First Tee, those who help us reach this goal will have a tangible, lasting impact on our local community for many years to come.”
In addition to creating a Board Designated Reserve Fund to provide long-term stability for the organization, the Campaign will fund three major objectives to build on existing initiatives of The First Tee. Through Expanded Outreach and Diversity, it will be possible to bring the program to more schools and community centers throughout the Met area, targeting locations where children have limited access to after-school youth programs. Facility Development and Growth will also give these young people who are introduced to The First Tee an opportunity to take the next step and become fully immersed in the life skills experience of the program. With added Educational Opportunities for students as they reach their teen years including internships and college prep, The First Tee will be able to help guide these students all the way through high school and beyond through the Path to College program.
