If there is just one important tip to winning fantasy baseball, it would be to constantly scour the waiver wire / free agents pool for your next big pickup. You should always be on the lookout for ways to improve your team. One way of making a big improvement is finding a good player who is currently available because he is injured and stashing him away on your disabled list. Managers who think in the long term are more likely to win it all.
If you don’t have any injuries on your team, don’t let your DL slot go to waste. Find someone to pick up and stash there. If someone ends up getting hurt, you can always drop whoever you picked up later.
Here are five players currently on the DL that are still ripe for the taking in many fantasy baseball leagues. Some players on this list are even scheduled to make a come back within the next couple of weeks so you’ll have to act fast if you want to beat other fantasy owners to the punch. Others are still a long way from returning but are still stash-worthy candidates for the long haul.
Brandon Beachy (Atlanta Braves – SP)
Owned in 36 percent of Yahoo! leagues
2012 stats: 81 innings, 5 wins, 5 losses, 68 K, 29 BB 2.00 ERA, 0.96 WHIP
Beachy is coming off Tommy John surgery and is still a good month or so away from returning to the Braves’ lineup. He’s currently on a rehab assignment with Gwinnett so keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn’t have a setback.
Kevin Youkilis (New York Yankees – 1B, 3B)
Owned in 43 percent of Yahoo! leagues
2013 stats: 17 games, 10 runs, 17 hits, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .266 average
Youkilis could rejoin the Yankees lineup as early as next week. He has had a couple of down fantasy seasons but is still very capable of hitting around .300 (he is a career .282 hitter) and 10-20 HR.
Mark Teixeira (New York Yankees – 1B)
Owned in 70 percent of Yahoo! leagues
2012 stats: 123 games, 66 runs, 113 hits, 24 HR, 84 RBI, 2 SB, .251 average
Teixeira is another injured Yankee getting very close to coming back. He could be activated sometime next week if all goes well. What is most concerning about Teixeira is that he had a wrist injury. Will his power still be there? If not, he won’t be very useful in fantasy with a batting average around .250 the last three years.
Jayson Werth (Washington Nationals – OF)
Owned in 49 percent of Yahoo! leagues
2013 stats: 27 games, 17 runs, 26 hits, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 2 SB, .260 average
Werth has been having problems staying healthy lately. He missed half the season last year and is currently on the DL with a hamstring injury (which could affect his speed). When healthy he is a 20 HR / 20 SB player. He might be worth stashing in hopes he gets healthy.
Corey Hart (Milwaukee Brewers – OF)
Owned in 37 percent of Yahoo! leagues
2012 stats: 149 games, 91 runs, 152 hits, 30 HR, 83 RBI, 5 SB, .270 average
Hart is still a long way from returning after having knee surgery. He could be back middle to late June in a best case scenario. That being said, he is definitely worth stashing on your DL if you have the roster space.
