On July 25, the University of Florida (UF) joined the ever growing list of entities attempting to distance themselves from alleged murderer and former New England Patriots’ tight end Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez also played tight end for the Fla. Gators from 2007 – 2009; but today, UF symbolically erased him from its history when the university “removed a brick from just outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium that honored Hernandez’s All-America status.”
SI reported today that in addition to cutting Hernandez’s brick from the Gator Walk on the outskirts of the stadium, UF has also been removing any images of Hernandez that have been residing in any of the university’s facilities.
Aaron Hernandez was arrested on June 26 and charged with the shooting murder of Odin Lloyd, whose dead body was found, shot in the head, about one mile from Hernandez’s North Attleborough, Mass. home.
The UF University Athletic Association released the following statement:
“We didn’t feel it was appropriate to celebrate Aaron Hernandez. We put together an immediate plan after the initial news broke to remove his likeness and name in various private and public areas in the facility, such as the South Endzone team area, locker room, football offices, Heavener Complex Kornblau Lobby and the brick display entrance to the football facility.”
“We were able to implement some of the changes immediately and this [brick removal] was a more complex process to complete with our vendors. The plan was to have everything completed before the end of July.”
Following his arrest, the New England Patriots told fans that they’d buy back any Pats’ jersey bearing Hernandez’s name and his number 81.
