The Flobots launched the second leg of their North American tour and are playing in Austin at Red 7 on Monday, May 27. Tickets are $15 and are available on the Red 7 website or at the door. The doors open at 9 p.m. at Red 7. Fellow Denver band Wheelchair Sports Camp will be the supporting act. Flobots are renowned for putting on great live shows.
Their third full-length record, ‘The Circle In The Square’ was released by Shanachie Records on August 28. The Flobots are using their music to expand awareness of the economic, political and social transformations that are taking place in the world around us. The tour promotes the album and the video for the single “The Circle In The Square” is embedded in this article.
Examiner had a moment to chat with band member Jonny 5 about the tour and performing in Austin.
Examiner: “Your third album is out now, entitled ‘The Circle in the Square’. Can you tell me more about it?”
Jonny 5: “We’ve been putting it together, it’s more personal than the last one. There’s a lot more happening musically than the first or second album. The second album was somewhat confused and tentative. This album is layered and wants the listener to dig deep and find something in the music.”
E: “You are performing in Austin on this tour. What is the appeal of Austin?”
J: “There’s a lot to love. I was actually born in Texas. I have family here. My grandma is 100 years old and lives in Gonzales. We like being in a town that values live music. We learned from Austin that supporting the music scene is good for everyone.”
E: “Who is your supporting act on this tour?”
J: “Wheelchair Sports Camp joined us on tour. The emcee is Kalyn Heffernan, who is a really good rapper. She has the bone disease osteogenesis imperfecta, so she’s a little person and she’s wheelchair bound. She’s really awesome and got arrested for graffiti in Austin in the past.”
The Flobots formed in Denver when a pair of emcees joined forces with a powerful rhythm section and a classically trained violist. Their fusion of hip-hop, breakbeats and symphonic crescendos has earned them a reputation for originality. Their hit “Handlebars” scored the number three position on Billboard’s “Modern Rock Tracks” chart. The current band members are Jamie “Jonny 5” Laurie on lead vocals, Stephen “Brer Rabbit” Brackett on lead vocals, Jesse Walker on bass guitar, Kenny “Kenny O” Ortiz on the drums and Mackenzie Gault on viola and vocals.
