No matter what kind of skills you learn, it is recommended to follow basic rules and format specifically established by each school (or style) until you earn decent skills. After mastering basic skills, it MAY be up to you how you modify and arrange skills so that you feel it comfortable with your skill. Extremely highly skillful people can develop their own skills and techniques. Eventually they can establish their own styles under their own “BRAND” name. However in order to reach such high level, they must have learned very diligently and spent tremendous amount of time for practicing and improving the skill.
If you take a look at the world of arts and sports such as painting, dancing, playing musical instruments, swimming and marshal arts whatsoever, there are variety of styles developed by each founder. However most of founders must have started from learning basic skills and formats before modifying, altering and developing the skills.
This means how important basic skill is. Without mastering basic skills, there are no possibilities for them to develop their own skills and styles. Through my experience of teaching flower arrangement at my school, once in a while I find students who do not want to spend sufficient time for learning basic skills. Instead they would like to jump up to a higher level of designs which require more difficult skills.
It is obvious that such way of approach does not work out and such students fail to be a good floral designer. Since I know about this, I always try to persuade them to follow basic rules and format until they reach a certain level of skill.
If you have learned floral arranging and reached a certain level of floral art, it is not so difficult to master other types of arrangements. Suppose you learned Japanese Ikebana and earned a decent skill of Ikebana arranging, you CAN usually have much less difficulties for mastering European floral designs compared to ordinary people who have no experiences in Ikebana arts.
Earning basic skills of European floral arrangements will greatly help you reduce your energy and time for mastering a higher level of skills required for wedding or funeral floral decorations. That is why most students are required to start from Elementary Course at our school UNLESS they have sufficient experiences in floral art.
California Flower Art Academy has been teaching various floral arrangements in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley (San Jose) since 1990 as a floral school certified by Flower Decorators Association (Tokyo Japan). Students can make a choice of their most favorite course among a WIDE RANGE OF PROGRAMS we offer. You can earn skills for doing floral business or just for your hobby. For those who have no previous experience in floral designing, we recommend Introductory Trial Budget Program that costs less than $100.
