We are at the middle of summer and having very high temperature every single day. During a summer season, we need to pay special attention to cut flowers so that they can remain fresh. Otherwise we are unable to make beautiful flower arrangements.
Especially fresh roses need careful attention because they easily lose freshness. A couple days ago, I bought bunch of fresh roses at the flower market and I have been keeping them in the refrigerator. This evening I sorted out these roses so they can be used for tomorrow’s flower arranging classes.
Although I cut the ends of all rose stems and put them in fresh water before keeping them in the refrigerator on the day I bought at the market, I again made fresh cuts with sharp angle and put them in fresh water at the classroom. After that I got rid of unnecessary leaves and twigs that will come under water. The above mentioned works will definitely help prolong the life of fresh roses. And it is so important to keep them fresh to make good floral decorations.
“Fresh cut and fresh water” is always the key for prolonging the life of fresh flowers. These works behind the scene is not visible to new students who are not yet familiar with how to handle fresh flowers. They are gradually getting familiar with handling fresh flowers in addition to how to make beautiful flower arrangements.
Some prospective students want to engage in floral business such as running a floral shop. The biggest reason behind it is they like the working environment that is surrounded by beautiful flowers and they can always enjoy handling and making floral decorations. However many of them do not fully understand what kind of works must be done behind the scenes. In this sense it is a good idea for students to experience working at a florist (even as a volunteer) so they can understand what must be done at a floral shop besides selling fresh flowers.
In addition to fresh cut and fresh water as well as getting rid of unnecessary leaves and twigs, keeping them in the air-conditioned cool room is so important especially during a summer season.
