If you have some students who have learned a lot about floral designs from you and they want to emulate you as an ideal floral artist, it is a good sign to prove that you are successful as a floral designer or floral art instructor.
From time to time new students begin to learn flower arrangements. Some want to learn strictly for hobby. Some would like to earn good skills so that they can engage in floral business as a floral shop owner, floral designer or wedding flower decorator whatsoever.
No matter for what kind of purpose they begin to learn floral designs, it is so important to be a “good” student. Some students would like to do the arrangements as they like from the first beginning stage rather than just following instructions from a teacher. Quite frankly speaking I cannot but say that such students do not qualify to be a good floral artist only because it does not make sense to take their own actions without following a teacher’s direction.
I do not mean that they should not do their own arrangements reflecting their own concept and design philosophy. What I want to say is that they should make the arrangements of their own idea and design after successfully earning a certain level of flower arranging skills.
Quite fortunately, most students are quite good in following a teacher’s instructions and directions.
They start with duplicating the designs made by their instructor and they try to “copy” the same way of decorations as teacher does. This is quite important and key to success for them to be a good floral designer.
It looks like the majority of students think they want to earn the same level of skills as their instructor’s. And some of our students raise constructive questions. After earning a decent level of skills, some of very enthusiastic students ask how to make a certain arrangement they found in the book or on the internet and request me to teach how to do and what to do for making a similar decoration.
Only because they have not yet completely mastered floral arranging satisfactory to them, it is still difficult for them to work on a kind of custom-designed arrangement found on a book or internet. However if I provide them with a suggestion and good advices for designing such arrangements, they can do it for making such specific arrangement and they feel pretty happy with their decorations. To make this kind of special instruction happen, once in a while I offer a special lesson for qualified students who are quite diligent and already earned a decent skill.
Through teaching them such high end arrangement, I remember what I learned from my teacher going back to so many years ago. Not only I myself but also my friends taking lessons together thought our instructor was a role model of floral designer and we wanted to continue learning toward our goal to become a floral designer like our teacher.
