Since we’ve relocated to downtown Indianapolis, more often than not, we find ourselves hopping on our bikes and riding the Cultural Trail down to the Fountain Square Neighborhood, just southeast of downtown. Seems this is still more of a “locals only” type of neighborhood, as I talk to many people that reside in the downtown area, recent transplants from other metropolitan areas both big and small, know little about it.
Word of mouth will slowly serve to change that, as every other week it seems a great new place opens to serve Indy’s ever-evolving dining and drinking needs. Others from the Indianapoils area that have not visited Fountain Square for years simply choose to believe it is still less than a desirable area with little to offer. Oh how they are wrong!
Once known for it’s many theaters, and acting as southside Indy’s primary commercial district, Fountain Square suffered a decline after the ’70s, but is currently experiencing a major revival.
Everyone has a first time to Fountain Square and mine was right before Indianapolis hosted Super Bowl 46. We attended Fountain Square Brewery’s grand opening. Since then, we have been back to this great local brewery for countless special events and beer tappings, as well as the occasional pint or two.
So I decided to feature Fountain Square Brewery first as I work my way down the long list of the many fine drinking establishments in the Fountain Square neighborhood.
On any given Sunday, much of downtown Indy can be found here in line for the $5 growler fills. We usually come by on Sunday to grab a pint or two as well as partake in the amazing growler deal. (Most Growler fills in the Indy area range on average between $10-$14.) Depending on the time of day-especially right before close, the “Growler Fill line” snakes around the bar and almost out the door, so be prepared to wait.
There is good reason for that-in addition to the amazing bargain of a $5 Growler(growler sold separately of course) The beer here is nothing short of amazing. Regularly rotating beers are: The Workingman’s Pilsener (ABV 5%, IBU 25), Preacher’s Daughter Amber (ABV 6%, IBU 20), Backyard Porter (ABV 5%, IBU 18) and Hop For Teacher Pale Ale (ABV 5.4%, IBU 45) FSB also features seasonal beers that are equally impressive.
Fountain Square also supports the local arts community and features many fine emerging artists on First Fridays and proudly displays their artwork. Friendly atmosphere and one of the best breweries around.
