Eat great food and make a difference in the community at the Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge on Saturday, August 3 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park. In its 12th year, this exciting Philadelphia event is bigger than ever, with food from many of the city’s favorite restaurants as well as entertainment for the entire family
During the annual Barbecue Challenge, barbecue enthusiastic who have entered in the competition will vie for titles of the best chicken, best ribs, and chef’s choice. Awards are presented for first through third place as well as an honorable mention, and one lucky team will win a trip for two to the 2013 World Series. A panel of judges including local celebrities, chefs, food industry representatives and guest judges, Phillies alumni will decide which team takes the prize.
Presented by Hatfield Quality Meats and Garland Jack’s Secret Six Barbecue Sauce, admission to the Barbecue Challenge is free; however when you get a look at the food available, you’ll want to buy your sampling tickets. While the food prepared in the challenge isn’t available to the public, 20 participating Philadelphia restaurants will be at the event with small plates to offer to attendees. Event Host Garry Maddox said that this is the largest number of participating restaurants he can remember in the history of the event. And with top spots such as Bull’s BBQ, Continental Midtown, El Vez, Famous Dave’s, Parc, Pod and XFINITY Live! participating, there’s sure to be something for everyone. In addition, Garry Maddox and the team from Hatfield Quality Meats will be cooking up ribs for the public. Sampling tickets for all of the restaurants can be purchased that day (one for $5 or three for $10).
More than just food, the event will feature entertainment such as performances by the Give and Take Jugglers, sumo wrestling and turkey leg jousting hosted by Garland Jack’s Secret Six Barbecue Sauce, a Turkey Hill ice cream stand, barbecue sauce sampling, a beer garden and more. Philly sports fans are invited to buy raffle tickets for the chance to win exciting prizes such as a Cliff Lee autographed ball, a Chase Utley autographed bat, a Scott Hartnell autographed hockey stick, and a Claude Giroux autographed pick. Other great prizes include a gift box of barbecue-friendly wines from Chaddsford Winery, four passes to the Adventure Aquarium, a year’s worth of free ice cream from Turkey Hill and more.

All proceeds from the Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox BBQ Challenge benefit Compete 360, a charity founded by former Phillies Centerfielder Garry Maddox in 2000. With a mission of supporting the development and education of urban youth, the organization’s new initiative “design thinking (DT)” will encourage students to learn by actively connecting what they do in school with what goes on in the world around them. The program targets students in the 8th grade, a group that Garry Maddox’s team has identified as being the age where the largest number of students drop out of school. Teachers in participating schools will be trained to facilitate DT projects with their students to prepare for DT Philly – a DT challenge where students will present their projects and compete for prize money that they can use to put their projects into action. By engaging teens in this lively and interactive way, they will be better prepared for higher education and the workforce.
