Our subject is indeed an in-depth study, and this writer’s shallow mind shudders at the implications. However, there are some who take a position concerning it which is not sustainable and we expect to study these very important facts.
Let us resolve first, that God is omniscient and here is the meaning of that word: Having total knowledge; knowing everything: an omniscient deity; the omniscient narrator.
Now in the case of God, this means there is nothing to be known, in the past, present or future, that he was not or is not aware of. This, of necessity includes the location, condition and purpose of each and every molecule in the entire universe. We understand perfectly, just how awesome such a statement is and, within the human mind, appears completely ridiculous to make such a claim. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that God is a being completely different than we are. A Spirit which has sufficient intelligence, knowledge and wisdom to create this entire universe which is precise, every molecule of every element, had to be placed in it’s proper position to make the functioning of this massive accumulation of bodies continue for the time He wishes it to exist.
This superiority is mentioned briefly in Isaiah, read this:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it (Isaiah 55:7-11 KJV)
Let us try and understand the difference, regardless of how closely connected, in the foreknowledge of God and the supposition of some that man is predestined to be saved or lost and cannot do anything about that. This is simply an untruth and a false doctrine taught by a number of people. It is a fact that God intervened in the lives and affairs of many people in early times and used miraculous means to accomplish His predetermined plan for man’s salvatiion. However, this was not predestination. He knew from before the creation, what it would take to accomplish his plan. Certain laws would be put into effect to bring the conditions into place for the coming of His Son, Jesus. Yet, every man had his free moral agency and could have done differently than that which he did, yet God in his infinite wisdom, knew for certain, what each one would do. This is the pinpoint which is missed by some. If it was known thousands of years in advance that a person would perform in such and such a way, then some people say he was powerless to change his mind. That is not true. It was simply that God knew whether or not he would change his mind ahead of time. There is a powerful technical difference here.
There are seven parables spoken by Jesus in Matthew chapter 13. These were spoken in parables in order for him to give the information to some yet in a manner which could not be understood by others. This was done in order not to disrupt the things known from before the creation. Jesus gives this explanation to his disciples when they followed him into the house and asked of him to explain the parable, which he did. Read full chapter here.
…that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world. Then he left the multitudes, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Explain unto us the parable of the tares of the field. (Matthew 13:35-36 ASV)
For God to predestine someone would assuredly be showing respect of persons by Him. Which is assured by His word that He does no such thing.
but glory and honor and peace to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek: for there is no respect of persons with God. 12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without the law: and as many as have sinned under the law shall be judged by the law; (Romans 2-10-12 ASV)
And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, and forbear threatening: knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no respect of persons with him. (Ephesians 6:9 ASV)
