776 voters within the Forney City limits made their way to the Forney sub-courthouse to cast an early vote for the upcoming election. Early voting is now over and Saturday, May 11 is election day. The campaigns of mayoral candidate John Carr and Council candidate Scott Regan have been widely criticized as being overly negative, sending out three negative mailers that have angered voters rather than energized them.
Recently, John Carr issued an apology on his Facebook page, hidden in the About Me section. Carr and Regan have not apologized to their opponents, Mayor Darren Rozell and Councilman James Hatley. Carr’s apology was only for the third negative mailer, which has a picture of a pig (as shown on this article). He did not apologize for the first two negative mailers. Carr wrote, “The most recent Mailer that went is in the mail was not approved by me. The words on it are not my words. The images on it were not approved by me. It is my campaign and I accept full responsibility for this error. My deepest apologies to the People of Forney.”
A Forney citizen asked Carr on his Facebook page to explain about him saying the words on the mailer were not his words. Carr’s response seemed to point the finger at one of his “donors”, whom he did not name. If a donor is running his campaign, that doesn’t bode well for Carr. The unnamed printing shop printed the mailer which clearly reads, “Paid Pol Adv By The John Carr and Scott Regan Campaigns.”
Here is Carr’s written response to the Forney citizen who questioned who wrote the mailer:
“That’s the problem…we don’t know. We got the proofs after they were sent. Neither Scott or I have spoken to the printer. We don’t know who it is. We finally got a contact last Thursday. After threatening to can all the mailers, they gave us some input on the last mailer to be delivered tomorrow or Friday. We put our foot down, if not a little late. If the mailer has an empty boxing ring…It was made by the donor, which means they ignored us. If it has two pairs of hands, it’s ours. We’ll wait and see. The first time I saw the one with the pig all I could think was, “we’re going to lose this race.” It made my wife cry. Now that I’ve looked at it awhile, I can see the pig is cute. I’m sure all the people so eager to gut me will blow up my page even worse. Ah well, it’s the truth, even if it doesn’t make me look perfect.”
He indicates that another negative mailer is on its way. Forney voters may be wondering if Carr can’t take charge of his campaign and the influence of his donors, how he plans to run the City.
**Update: After this article came out, John Carr deleted his comments from his Facebook page and removed the comments section in its entirety. 5/09/13 11:00 a.m.**
