Have you ever found yourself flailing about in a relational tug of war, wondering why life just doesn’t seem to be working well right now? Have you felt un-loved, un-appreciated and seriously considered getting in the car to drive to some faraway place where no one would find you? Relationships can be exhausting and expensive. Not just in the financial realm but emotionally. What if there were simple steps to take to turn the negative balance into an exhilarating experience? Here are four keys to enjoying a healthy relationship:
Stop Complaining – We all do it and sometimes we ride that horse a little too long. We may have even conditioned ourselves to look for the bad in a situation just to voice our disapproval. Why? Does it make us feel bigger, better or more in control? Perhaps temporarily, but complaining rarely changes circumstances or people.
Don’t Criticize – Have you ever felt motivated to be your best when someone you love or admire is railing on you about this, that and the next thing? When we feel the boss breathing down our neck it doesn’t help us to be creative or efficient, it only instills fear of failure. There is no such thing as constructive criticism. It only hurts and alienates the target of our tongue lashing.
Learn to Appreciate – Most who have fled a relationship do so because they feel unappreciated. People will stay in careers they hate just because they feel appreciated. Why not make it a daily aim to freely distribute words of appreciation to those around us? Choose to recognize the good in others; it will serve as healing medicine to the wounds of the world.
Encourage Others – When we speak words of encouragement, we are imparting strength into that relationship. We are telling that person that we find them worthy of our time and attention. We are fueling them with faith in themselves and courage to move forward with confidence.
How much do you think its worth to feel the comfort of knowing someone believes in you? Lovers, family members and co-workers alike are starved for kind words. Why not be the one to make a daily deposit into their hearts?
