This past weekend in Oklahoma City, on the campus of Oklahoma City University, people from all walks of faith, joined the United Methodist Women in the Mission U symposium.(formerly known as the Cooperative School of Christian Mission.) Women, Men, Youth, and Children came together to learn about multiple topics, and how they are affecting our modern world, as we see it in 2013. (The theme was; “Learning together for the transformation of the world”.)
Some of the topics covered in this years Mission U included the following:
The Call: Living Sacramentally,Walking Justly
The Roma of Europe
Immigration (Children and youth study)
Along the weekend, the attendees were blessed to have two guest speakers, one at the Saturday luncheon and one for Sunday worship. The speaker for the luncheon was Rev. Jeff Jaynes, Executive Director, Restore Hope Ministries, in Tulsa,OK. For the Sunday worship service the attendees had the chance to hear Rev. Donna Dodson, District Superintendent, Enid District, Oklahoma Annual Conference. (Both speakers did a wonderful job and both had very powerful messages that were right on topic with topics taught at Mission U.)
The enrichment classes for the school of mission included the topics of;
Estate Planning and Giving- the next 150 years
UMW Update- What’s going on in Oklahoma
Sensitivity Training-Words that hurt, words that heal
Bullying- What we all need to know
The Phillipines- A mission field for education
On Saturday attendees had the chance to go on two separate tours, after partaking of the sub par food options for dinner.
The tours included;
First was a tour of the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO, as it is more commonly known).
The second tour that was being offered Saturday evening was to TEEM (aka. The Educational and Employment Ministry).
In the morning hours of Saturday, had the chance to travel to Epworth in OKC to help at their clinic as their service project for this session of Mission U.
If you were not doing any of the above mentioned at some point, then you had the option to help put school bags together for distribution to children to begin this upcoming school year with. The agencies that received the backpacks to distribute after assembly were Skyline Urban Ministries in OKC, and Restore Hope Ministries in Tulsa.
Also in the evening on Saturday, if you were not doing the above you also had the chance to watch some lesson related videos in the video room. (That way you coul stay ahead of the game.)
All and all minus the food, this really was a great event put on by the UMW and Mission and Service Ministry Team in joint effort with OCU.
Just remember to save the date of July 18th-21st for the next Mission U Symposium. Hear is a heads up, sneek preview of the 2014 topics;
