Think South Street Seaport is still in disarray from Hurricane Sandy? Think again!
The South Street Seaport (Pier 17 on the East River in Lower Manhattan) is back and better than ever!
As part of the See/Change Summer Program, families can drop by the cobblestone-lined (tres European!) side streets to check out a multitude of pop up retailers (who can resist a store called simply It’s Sugar? Hmmm, wonder what it sells…) and as of July 18, 50% of the rent proceeds will go towards rebuilding more of the historic Seaport. There’s also a rotating collection of a dozen local food and beverage outlets ranging from pizza to Mexican food to lobster curated by Brooklyn Flea, and, of greatest importance to NY Frugal Family readers, a FREE Sound Bites music series (every Sunday in August) and the equally FREE summer long Front Row Cinema series!
Now, granted, there are lots of places to see FREE family-friendly movies outdoors in NYC in the summertime. But, Front Row Cinema gives out FREE popcorn! And beach chairs to recline in! (Plus you don’t need to wait in line for an hour like at Bryant Park, or wrestle for your inch of cramped seating like everywhere else.)
Movies begin at dusk, but you can come early and make a day of it by taking a ferry ride (it docks only a few blocks away), exploring the surrounding nooks and crannies (some of which feature unexpected art installations, not to mention quiet spaces to catch your breath), and hanging out at the nearby Imagination Playground, an interactive, transformable space where kids can manipulate their environment and create a play space of their own with sand, water, giant foam blocks, mats, wagons, fabric and, well, their imaginations.
Upcoming family-friendly screenings include “Stark Trek” on July 31, “The Muppets” on August 3, “Hugo” on August 10, “The Amazing Spider-Man” on August 14, “Back to the Future” on August 21, “Gigi” on August 24, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” on August 31 and “Up” on September 7.
The South Street Seaport’s Front Row Cinema is, so far, a hidden gem amongst the city’s other, summertime attractions, uncrowded and unspoiled, with views to die for. So hurry on down before the secret is out!
The same is true for New York City’s FREE Park Programs. From fishing to canoeing to sports’ clinics to animal encounters and more, it’s all available in NYC’s parks and it’s all FREE! Check out a comprehensive listing, here.
