There has been intense speculation about who will be cast in the lead roles in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie. But according to an Us Weekly report on July 26, 2013, two actors who will not be in the movie are Garrett Hedlund and Iam Somerhalder.
As previously reported, “Fifty Shades Grey” is scheduled for release in cinemas on Aug. 1, 2014. The movie should premiere on demand later that year. The cast members of the movie have not yet been announced.
The movie is based on E.L. James’ best-selling erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which is about a sadomasochistic romance between a dominant, wealthy 27-year-old entrepreneur named Christian Grey and his submissive sex partner Anastasia “Ana” Steele, who is a 21-year-old college student.
Sam Taylor-Wood will helm “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which will be her second feature film as a director. Taylor-Wood also directed the dramatic film “Nowhere Boy” (about John Lennon’s teenage years), which was released in the U.K. in 2009 and in the U.S. in 2010.
According to Us Weekly, Hedlund (who is best known for starring in the 2010 movie “Tron: Legacy”) turned down the role of Christian Grey because he didn’t want to commit to doing the three movies that are being planned as part of the “Fifty Shades” series. An unnamed source told Us Weekly: “Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn’t let him do just one film.”
Meanwhile, Ian Somerhalder (who is best known for starring in the TV series “The Vampire Diaries”) publicly expressed interest in the role, but “Fifty Shades of Grey” author James reportedly doesn’t want him in the movie.
In an April 2013 radio interview with Ryan Seacrest, Somerhalder wasn’t shy about saying that he wanted the role of Christian Grey: “It could be very, very amazing. I have the book and I just started reading it. That would be a pretty incredible thing, and hopefully that could pan out . . . Beyond the shadow of a doubt, I think that would be a phenomenal opportunity!”
However, an unnamed source told Us Weekly: “E.L. was at a Comic-Con party July 20 telling people the part won’t go to Ian.”
Matt Bomer, Alexander Skarsgård, Ryan Gosling, Alex Pettyfer, Chris Evans, Robert Pattinson and Henry Cavill are among the other actors who are most-mentioned as the ones whom “Fifty Shades of Grey” fans think will be cast in the role of Christian Grey.
As for the actresses who are being mentioned as possible contenders for the Ana Steele role, the names that have come up the most often in Internet speculation are Alexis Bledel, Selena Gomez, Felicity Jones, Kristen Stewart, Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, Emmy Rossum and Elizabeth Olsen.
“Harry Potter” star Emma Watson has already tweeted a denial to rumors that she was interested in the role of Ana Steele. Watson tweeted: “Who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”
Someone who is definitely not going to be cast as Christian Grey is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is married to Sam Taylor-Wood and who played John Lennon in “Nowhere Boy.” The couple began dating shortly after they began working together on “Nowhere Boy.” Taylor-Wood and Taylor-Johnson have two daughters together. Taylor-Wood also has two daughters with her ex-husband, art dealer Jay Jopling. Taylor-Johnson (who is best known for his starring role in the “Kick-Ass” movies) changed his last name from Johnson after he and Taylor-Wood got married in 2012.
Taylor-Johnson’s publicist told USA Today: “Aaron is not doing ’50 Shades of Grey.’ Rather simple.”
Perhaps Taylor-Wood and James wanted Hedlund to play Christian Grey because they saw Hedlund’s steamy sex scenes in the independent movie drama “On the Road,” the film version of Jack Kerouac’s 1957 classic novel. In the “On the Road” movie, Hedlund played the promiscuous and bisexual Dean Moriarty, who is a character based on Kerouac’s real-life close friend Neal Cassady. “On the Road” had a limited release in December 2012 before opening in more theaters in January 2013. The movie bombed at the box office and got mostly negative reviews from critics, although Hedlund was singled out by many critics for being one of the better actors in the movie.
Of course, there is always the possibility that completely unknown actors will be cast as Christian Grey and Ana Steele. However, from a marketing standpoint, the movie studio probably wants at least one well-known actor to be cast in a starring role in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie.
