The following genealogical events will be held in the metro Atlanta area during June 2013.
1 June – Frazine Taylor will present “Researching African American Genealogy.” The event will be held at the Auburn Avenue Research Library, 101 Auburn Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30303 starting at 3:00 p.m. For information, call 404-730-4001 ext. 100.
2 June – Our Genealogy Group, which usually meets at Clayton State University, will relax at our annual picnic at the home of Chris and Angela Pendleton in Fayetteville, GA. The OGG is celebrating the 5th year of fellowship, education, and food. The gatherings are open to everyone; we encourage ALL family historians regardless of the level of research. 2 and 9 June – The Lawrenceville Family History Center, 3355 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville, GA 30044 will sponsor a hands-on workshop on organizing your family papers. Bring your papers and supplies. The workshop will meet from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. For more information email Kristi Manuel at firstname.lastname@example.org. The FHC will sponsor monthly workshops.
7 June – The National Archives at Atlanta, 5780 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow, GA 30260 will sponsor the First Friday Freebies. “The War of 1812: Privateers, Plunder, and Profiteering” will be presented by Shane Bell. Bring your lunch, the free program will be held from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m.
14 June – The Georgia Archives, 5800 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow, GA 30260 will host the monthly Lunch & Learn Series. “Using the Collections of the Georgia Archives Refresher” will be presented by Kayla Barrett and “Update on the Transition of the Georgia Archives” will be presented by Christopher M. Davidson.
15 June – The Atlanta History Center, 130 West Paces Ferry Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30305 hold the free admission weekend. “Juneteenth: The First Day of Freedom” will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Come and celebrate the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
15 June – The Genealogical Society of Henry & Clayton Counties, 71 Macon St, McDonough, GA 30253 will meet at 10:00 a.m. “Georgia and National Policies at the time of Henry County’s Founding” will be presented by Jeffery Wells. For more information call 770-954-1456.
17 June – the Gwinnett Historical Society, 185 W. Crogan St, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 will meet at 7:30 p.m. “Daring Doctor in Dixie: Noel d’Alvigny” will be the topic presented by Rick Clarke. Dr. d’Alvigny served as a surgeon in the 9th Georgia Light Artillery and is the role model for the character Dr. Meade in “Gone With the Wind.” For more information read the GHS website at www.gwinnetths.org.
19 June – The Gwinnett Genealogy Study Group will meet at the Duluth Masonic Lodge #480, 3337 Duluth Highway, Duluth, GA 30096. The program will meet from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. The program will include DNA testing, documentation, book of the month, and website of the month. 27 June – The Cobb County Genealogical Society, 189 Church St, Marietta, GA 30060 will meet at 7:00 p.m. “Basic Computer Maintenance and Free Genealogy Resources” will be presented by Mike Ameye.
30 June – “My Father’s Name: A Black Virginia Family After the Civil War” will be presented by Dr. Lawrence Jackson.
