One of the ingredients that have made “General Hospital” one of the most popular soaps over the past 50 years has been the bond of family, complex friendships and exploration of human relations. The June 19 episode of GH encompassed those relations along with the usual drama that makes Port Charles an interesting place.
A round of applause goes out to Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) for allowing himself to reach out to someone who has been supportive to him and in small but important ways have saved his life. The consequences of Luke’s alcoholism have showed its effects on Luke and those who love him. The current health scare has brought out that stubbornness that has come to define the older version of the character, but it has also scared him into a reflection on his life and those he cares about. Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) is one of those people. She is his best friend and it was good to see him show he cared about her by caring about himself. Allowing Tracy to come along with him to see the doctor indicates that he is ready to face his fate, but realizes he doesn’t want to be alone. Yesterday’s scene between Luke and Tracy, where Luke asks Tracy on a date to escort him to the hospital really emphasized the quality of their relationship and the friendship they have developed by facing their fears together.
Love them or hate them, the slow developing romance between Patrick (Jason Thompson) and Sabrina (Teresa Castillo) has brought some love back to the afternoon. Patrick is showing tenderness and patience with Sabrina, which highlights his growth from the womanizing young doctor that he was when he was first introduced and found the love of one Robin Scorpio. But Britt(Kelly Thiebaud) continues to be a staple in their relationship. With the help of Felix(Marc Samuel), Ellie (Emily Wilson) and Spinelli(Bradford Anderson), they have worked together to get a paternity test on Britt in hopes of proving the baby she is carrying is not Patrick’s. Will Britt and the slimy lab tech Brad be able to stay one step ahead of him? It may be Brad’s lust for Felix that ends up stalling Britt’s scheme. The measures Felix is willing to go through for his friends in “performing” for Brad as a means of distraction shows his dedication to Sabrina.
Rafe (Jimmy Deshler) has found an extended family in Port Charles. Sam (Kelly Monaco), Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), Lucy (Lynn Herring) and Molly (Haley Pullos) really care for him and have become his support system. It was good to see them all together having breakfast to say goodbye to Rafe and also all be there for Sam as she prepared Danny for his first Chemo treatment. The element of family and friendships were present in those scenes, an element that has been missing since the late 90’s. But of course Silas (Michael Easton) showed up to put a dent in the moment. Gaining custody of Rafe and then taking him away from Port Charles and the home he has come to know has made Silas a bad guy in the eyes of those who care for Rafe, but maybe there is a deeper reason for his actions. It was Silas who told Sam about Danny’s current condition and it may ultimately be Silas who saves his life. Whatever the reason, Silas showed a little bit of heart by deciding to stay in Port Charles which keeps Rafe around those he cares about. But what impact will Silas have on the lives of both Sam and Danny?
Another round of applause goes out to the teen scene and bringing social awareness to the affects of drinking and sex. TJ’s (Tequan Richmond) talk with Shawn (Sean Blakesmore) and Taylor’s (Samantha Logan) talk with Britt about relationships and using protection was good to see. TJ is becoming quite the character and Taylor seems to need a bit of growth but in soaps there is always something life changing that happens to a character like Taylor that injects that growth. The hints are evident as to where this story is going, but hopefully the writers don’t go own the usual route of a teenage pregnancy.
Elsewhere in Port Charles, Felix caught Taylor in her “walk of shame” and confronted her about drinking and sex. Lucy called Silas a “vampire” for sucking the life out of Rafe and Spinelli and Ellie got closer to the truth about Britt’s baby.
