There wasn’t a lot of smiling on the July 29 episode of “General Hospital”. There was a shift of power at ELQ, Franco (Roger Howarth) survived surgery but a new problem arose, and mommy dearest returned to Port Charles demeaning words of encouragement for her daughter Britt (Kelly Thibauld).
Tracy’s (Jane Elliot) smile quickly turned to a frown as the impromptu ELQ board meeting revealed that AJ (Sean Kanan) actually had majority of shares due to housemaid Alice switching sides. Tracy has never been nice to Alice, so it is no shock she decided to switch to AJ’s side. The scene became hilarious as Tracy got physical with Alice, the professional wrestler, with AJ sitting and gloating. But this power struggle between AJ and Tracy is hardly over. Suddenly Kiki (Kristen Alderson) holds the shares that could shift power again. Even more reason for Ava (Maura West) to keep the truth about Kiki’s paternity secret. Unfortunately for her, Morgan (Bryan Craig) can’t keep his mouth shut. On Monday he revealed to his father Sonny (Maurice Benard) that his reasoning for marrying Kiki is to keep her away from Michael (Chad Duell) who is not really her cousin. Morgan revealed the secret conveniently enough for Connie (Kelly Sullivan), who is looking for a story to boost readership of the Port Charles Press, to overhear. This information is valuable for Ava and the future of ELQ so Connie’s knowledge of the information may put her in a danger zone.
There is never a smile present when Dr. Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) is in town. In fact, there are usually dark clouds, gloom and doom whenever she is around. Her devious delivery makes her daughter Britt seem very normal. Not only is she demeaning towards her daughter, she has no problem getting physical with her as she slapped a pregnant Britt. There may be outrage for this action, but it also proves how treacherous this woman is. Through conversation it was revealed that the baby Britt is carrying is not Patrick’s (Jason Thompson). Dr. Obrecht feels her daughter is getting sloppy and losing her upper hand to Felix (Marc Anthony Samuel) and Sabrina (Teresa Castillo) who may have just figured out that Britt’s mother is Dr. Obrecht. With the information that Brad gave Felix about Britt’s mother holding the truth about the baby, both Felix and Sabrina are getting close to the truth, but what will that truth cost when dealing with a woman like Dr. Obrecht
Franco is out of surgery and has survived but as Patrick points out, there is no guarantee he will be the same person. The news delighted Sam (Kelly Monaco) because he is a match for Danny. But her temporary ray of hope turned again to disappointment when Patrick tells her that Franco may have cancer, therefore his bone marrow wouldn’t be good for Danny. He tells her to look for another possible donor. The news also lighted up the face of Carly (Laura Wright) who went into to see Franco. She explained to him what happened on the bridge and how he could help Danny. She is not sure he hears her, but towards the end of the episode he grabs her arm just after she mentions him changing and that helping Danny could give him the redemption he seeks. Head writer Ron Carlivati seemed to have been playing with the viewers with that line. In order for Franco to truly be redeemed, he may have to end up being a different person altogether.
Elsewhere in Port Charles, Ava swore to Tracy that Kiki was a real Quartermaine. AJ and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) shared a tender moment after his ELQ victory and Michael and Kiki found themselves in each other’s presence again at the hospital.
