WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) was electric on Saturday night, June 29, stopping highly-regarded contender Matthew Macklin in under three rounds of action after a wicked body shot put the Birmingham native down for the count.
As modest and low-key as a prizefighter as you will find, Golovkin is starting to endear himself to boxing fans with his seek-and-destroy style and destructive power. Macklin had gone eleven spirited rounds with Argentina’s Sergio Martinez a little over a year ago but he simply had no answer for Golovkin on this night.
Speaking with various members of the media after his latest triumph, Golovkin admitted that the Macklin clash was perhaps a little easier than expected.

“It feels great,” said Golovkin. “Not a very difficult fight for me. I don’t think [he was] scared. He understood the situation.
“It wasn’t my power, it was my position,” Golovkin added when assessing the left hand that crippled Macklin over.
Golovkin has already had three fights in 2013 and added that he will likely be heading back to his training bases in Big Bear, Calif. around August to being preparing for another melee.
When asked for his thoughts on his future, Golovkin recognized that a fight with Martinez, the man regarded as the lineal middleweight king, is likely not an immediate option due to Sergio’s various injuries following his close victory over Martin Murray in late April.
“I think it’s a great fight next year, for the future,” Golovkin said. “For me, it doesn’t matter. Right now there’s a big focus on middleweight. There’s a lot of big names. Peter Quillin; Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is a big name.”
A potentially huge fight for Golovkin down the road could be against super middleweight champion Andre Ward, but the Kazakhstan native can’t even seem to assess the fight for the time being.
“Right now my focus is on middleweight,” Golovkin said. “In the future, yes. I respect Andre. He’s the best super middleweight champion. I think it’s a great fight for everybody.”
When asked just how much he would love a match with the sport’s premier fighter, Floyd Mayweather, Golovkin couldn’t hide his emotions.
“This is my dream,” Golovkin said of a possible super fight with Floyd. “[It’s] a big present for me. This is business.”
