The only way to enrich your life through new experiences and opportunities is to be brave enough to conquer them. If you have ever heard the term “vegan” and run the other way, slow down for a second and ask yourself what you’re so afraid of. Essentially, a vegan meal is food comprised of non-animal products. Have you ever eaten a mixed green salad with cherry tomatoes, matchstick carrots and a little olive oil and vinegar? If so, then you have already had a vegan experience. How about a black bean burger–an entree that’s a bit more “adventurous”? Any version whose recipe leaves out the egg could be considered to be vegan as well.
As Tallahassee is a small town riddled with chains such as Chili’s, Outback Steakhouse and even the less abundant restaurants such as Roly Poly or Ted’s Montana Grill, establishments that are centered around a vegan menu are certainly bound to be deemed the black sheep of them all. There don’t seem to be many; a conclusion brought about by a quick search on Happy Cow. One that seems to be gaining recognition through word of mouth lately is Soul Vegetarian, or “Soul Veg,” for short, located on South Adams Street, very close to the downtown area.
If you are ready to dive into a divine vegan meal, this is the perfect place to start. The restaurant is a modest size and the staff greets you with a happy smile. A few people ahead of you in line? The cashier will cheerily tell you, “Be with you in just a moment, ma’am/sir.” Take advantage of this time to explore the menu which is printed in large, easily read print and hangs on the wall. There are different specials throughout the week, (including Lasagna, Chili Cheese Mac and Baked Spaghetti) accompanied by other options such as burgers, sandwiches and salads.
Tuesday’s special is a real treat–gluten free vegan pizza. Once you try this, you will not be having any Pizza Hut or Little Caesar’s cravings in the near future. Reminiscent of a traditional American pie, Soul Veg’s slices are topped with tomato sauce, assorted veggies, TVP (textured vegetable protein; much tastier than it sounds, truly!) and cheese! Your generous slice is accompanied by a vegetable, side salad and a large chunk of cornbread.
Not only is the surprisingly delicious food a major reason to take a trip to this yummy vegan restaurant, but the great service and hospitable attitudes as well. When your tastes buds are yearning for an adventurous meal, steer yourself in the direction of Tallahassee’s Soul Vegetarian restaurant.
