Furious over an ad by Democrat Ed Markey that shows his face next to that of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden, Republican senate candidate Gabriel Gomez called the Massachusetts Democrat “pond scum” in an interview at the Newtown Needham Chamber of Commerce earlier this week, The Hill reported Friday.
“You know I’ve got four young kids, and they gotta sit there and gotta see an ad with their dad, who’s a SEAL, who served honorably, talk to anybody I served with — whether as a pilot or as a SEAL, anybody I worked with,” he said.
“And for him to be as dirty and low, pond scum, to like put me up there next to Bin Laden, he’s just gotta be called what he is. That simple,” he added.
Gomez doubled-down on Friday when he appeared on Howie Carr’s radio program, Michael Patrick Leahy wrote at Breitbart.com.
When asked if he would apologize for calling Markey pond scum, he refused.
“Absolutely not. It has a higher approval rating than congress,” he said.
Gomez told Carr the ad “was all over the place on the web. My eight-year old son saw it and asked me what I was doing next to Bin Laden?”
According to Carr, an online poll he ran Friday said that “91% of listeners who responded agreed that Gomez’s comments about Markey were not harsh enough,” Leahy added.
The Hill defended the bin Laden ad, claiming it attacked Gomez for supporting a group that criticized Obama, “but doesn’t compare Gomez and bin Laden directly.”
But visuals are an integral part of campaign ads, and a politician with Markey’s experience knows this, Gomez maintains.
“Congressman Markey’s been around for 40 years, he knows exactly what he’s doing,” Gomez said.
Gomez also said that a Markey ad showing an automatic weapon firing in his direction blames him for the Newtown school shooting.
Markey’s campaign defends the ad, calling Gomez’ statements “desperation.”
“Unfortunately for Gomez, his desperate attack will do nothing to distract from his opposition to an assault weapons ban and limits on high-capacity magazines, or his refusal to release his 2005 tax return that would reveal how much he pocketed from taking a questionable $280,000 tax break on his Cohasset home,” said Markey press secretary Andrew Zucker.
But Gomez hit Markey for taking over $11,000 in Social Security benefits while serving in Congress in 2012.
“He pays a lower rate than I do,” Gomez said. “He’s receiving social security benefits as well. I hope to be the person to make sure that’s all he’s collecting after the election… You can totally see why he went ballistic when the President said he might have to do some entitlement reform and tie Social Security benefits to the CPI.”
Markey and Gomez are running to fill the Senate seat formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry. The election is set for June 25.
