# 15—WWE Championship with Shawn Michaels as the guest referee: The Undertaker © vs. Bret Hitman Hart—Summer Slam 1997—East Rutherford, New Jersey
Heading into this match, the on-screen (and behind the scenes) feud between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels was nearing its breaking point. As for Undertaker, he had been WWE Champion since Wrestle Mania 13 (which took place in March of 1997) when he defeated Sid. The pre-match stipulations were if HBK favored Taker during the bout, he could never wrestle in the U.S. In addition, if Hart lost the match, he would never wrestle in the U.S. again. After a very entertaining bout (and almost 29 minutes), Hart spit in the face of HBK (who was holding a steel chair he had taken from Hart). HBK snapped and swung the chair at Hart, Hart tucked and HBK hit Taker. Due to the pre-match stipulations, HBK was forced to count the pin fall, giving Hart the win and his fifth WWE Championship.
