There will be dancing in the streets and Cleveland history buffs are invited to join the fun at Greenfield Village’s 7th annual Ragtime Street Fair on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14 in Dearborn, Michigan near Detroit. It is approximately a 2.5 hour journey for Cleveland drivers.
Ragtime Street Fair Located at The Henry Ford Museum complex, Greenfield Village is a living history museum and historic village comprised of 80 authentic, historic structures stretched over 80 acres. This Street Fair will be a celebration of the early 20th century’s Ragtime era. All staff members will be dressed in Ragtime-era apparel.
When one thinks of ragtime, one usually immediately thinks of the music of the era and songs like Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” and “Maple Leaf Rag.” If you love ragtime music you won’t be disappointed. Scores of musicians will be performing on various stages throughout Greenfield Village during the Street Fair. Dancing in the streets is encouraged.
Among the performers and groups will be “Perfessor” Bill Edwards, ragtime pianist Taslimah Bey, Tartersauce Traditional Jazz Band and River Raisin Ragtime Revue.
Activities at this family-friendly, educational event include dance demonstrations and instruction (You can learn the Turkey Trot!), phonograph and player piano demonstrations and you can attend a performance of the 30 minute music and comedy revue, “Simply Gershwin.” Be sure to catch the Piano Cutting Contest (where pianists show off their talent in a high-energy competition on Saturday.
Visitors will also be able to view the 13 minute Mack Sennett slapstick comedy film, “Lizzies of the Field” (complete with live piano accompaniment).
Guests will also be able to participate in the Cake Walk, a traditional dance competition where the “winner takes the cake”.
Ragtime food vendors will turn Greenfield Village’s Main Street into a turn-of-the-century food court where the Henry Ford chefs will have several regional foods available for purchase.
Saturday evening there will be a Dixieland Jazz Parade honoring the Ragtime era and the birth of jazz. The Dixieland-style parade will take place around the Village Green and down Main Street led by Tartersauce Traditional Jazz Band.
All activities at the Ragtime Street Fair are free with regular admission to Greenfield Village. Tickets are $24 for adults (13-61), $22 for seniors (62+) and $17.50 for children (5-12). Children 4 and under are free. Admission for Museum Members is free. There is also a $5 parking fee for non-members. Admission entitles you to enjoy all parts of Greenfield Village during the Street Fair.
Greenfield Village will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Sunday, July 14 hours are 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
