The idea of grounding or Earthing lets you take a new look at your shoes without being told you took a sudden interest in your feet because you’re shy. Are the soles rubber, plastic, or leather? According to Conduct Yourself Properly, “a cross section of a shoe – reveals several layers: outsole, midsole, insole filler material, footbed, cushioning, sockliner.
Just be careful not to walk barefoot in rural or forested areas where there are mouse droppings and possible viruses such as hanta virus or bubonic plague bacteria from rodent droppings. You may want to do earthing in your backyard, if your pets aren’t doing their business there for you to step in barefoot.

Research shows health benefits. And the studies continue. At least various cardiologists and other scientists are measuring cortisol levels before and after grounding. The question is how does the Earth’s bare ground energy field protect the body from ubiquitous environmental electric charges (EMFs)? So now the research turns to studying the effects of EMFs on the body to see which people are sensitive to EMFs. At least Earthing makes a great start in this research.
Here’s how to reconnect with the Earth
Sacramento has various movements that focus on going barefoot or sleeping and working on the bare Earth for health benefits. It’s based on serious research. There’s a new book just published, April 30, 2010 on Earthing called “Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?”
There also has been considerable attention paid to the new study published in the journal, Nature by Harvard’s Daniel Lieberman calling attention to the growing debates on shoes versus barefoot running. Also, the Sacramento Bee published an article in 2007 on barefoot running featuring Davis runners Efrem Rensi and Noah Elhardt.
Current research now focuses on the health benefits of walking, walking, working, and sleeping on the bare ground to normalize the electricity in your body. If you look at the study in Nature, the debate is still on regarding running or walking barefoot and injury.
What the Nature study hasn’t measured is the long term (or even the short term) effects of the change on loading rates on different joints. So, if you still want to get grounded in Earthing, you don’t necessarily have to walk or run on the ground.
Sit, work, walk, or sleep grounded in electricity coming from the Earth
You can sit, work, or sleep grounded as well and still get the benefits from the electricity coming out of the Earth that offers health benefits to the electricity in your body. It’s like a reciprocal Namaste— as in the ‘electricity’ in my body greets the ‘electricity’ in your body. (You can substitute the word ‘electricity’ for “life force” or ‘energy’ or ‘chi’).
There’s a debate on about being barefoot. See Biomechanics: Barefoot running strikes back: Nature. Then take a look at the article, Barefoot Running May Have Health Benefits. Which is better, having the less collision force of running barefoot? Or the chances of injury? But you don’t have to run. You can sit on the bare earth or put your feet on the ground as you work. The idea is to be grounded properly while Earthing.
Earthing is about grounding yourself on the bare earth, primarily while sleeping at night. For more than a decade, Earthing research has revealed numerous health benefits, according to an article (page 52) by Martin Zucker in the Townsend Letter, May 2010, “Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?” The book by the same name is due out April 30, 2010. Earthing focuses on health benefits that result from grounding your body by walking barefoot outside or sleeping outside on the ground, as prehistoric folks have done. It’s also about sitting, working, and sleeping indoors grounded. It’s also about buying Earthing products that “conveniently ground your body” when you’re indoors.
If you take an extension cord by itself, it does nothing to restore your energy. What you need, says quite a lot of research, is the Earth’s natural “healing energy to the body.” You want to go barefoot or find a barefoot-quality product that works to improve your health. Can research make health claims for Earthing and grounding? Check out the website for the Earthing Institute’s products. Various Earthing products are being offered to help you ground yourself by Earthing, such as walking barefoot on the ground.
Look at the bottom of your feet to make sure parasites aren’t entering through pores
Are there parasites going to enter through your pores as you walk on the bare ground? Will the bottom of your feet become like shoe leather after you walk long enough without shoes? How do you feel about grounding yourself? What does it mean to be well-grounded as it relates to your health?
Try the Earthing mat on the floor as you rest your bare feet on it while working indoors at your computer, for example. See the Earthing Connection Universal Mat. It’s made from “sturdy conductive carbonized rubber.” According to the site, the universal mat can be used anywhere “as a barefoot floor mat, desk mat, mouse pad or on a chair, couch or bed.”
What might be some of the improvements of numerous inflammation-related ailments from grounding? According to the Townsend Letter article, Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery, benefits also include reduction of chronic pain, better sleep, increased energy, lowered stress, more calmness, normalization of the body’s biological rhythms, thinner blood, improved blood pressure, relief from headache and muscle tension, faster healing of bedsores, reduction of jet lag, protection against potentially disturbing environmental electromagnetic fields, and accelerated recovery from intense athletic activity.
Earthing is as simple as walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, and sleeping indoors connected to conductive devices that transfer the outside ground energy inside to you, according to the article. Is it safe for people with electrical disturbances inside their body already–such as irregular heart beats? According to the article and the book of the same title, such indoor devices are described as “connected via a wire to a properly grounded electrical outlet inside homes, offices, and clinics, or to a ground rod outside.”
Before you jump to the conclusion that the article makes claims, the article also goes on to report that the grounding devices include, “special cotton sheets or pads allowing you to work or relax grounded.” The article also suggests that “Velcro body bands and standard medical EKG patches, with a grounding connection, [are] applied to body parts to address local pain and inflammation.”
From there, you can read the book or subscribe to the Townsend Letter and read the article in the May 2010 issue. Another alternative is to look at the research in scientific and medical journals that already is online. The topic is Earthing research.
The patches have been used in Earthing research. Can doctors use them in clinical settings? The research is there. For more than a decade, people of all ages have been using these devices. The book documents the research. Bicycle teams used Earthing “sleeping bags” to recover faster from bike-riding injuries during the competition. The popular cardiologist, Stephen Sinatra who wrote books a few years ago on reversing heart disease is a co-author of the book, Earthing, published by Basic Health Publications. Another co-author is Clint Ober, who researches how to connect with the Earth.
According to the article, Dr. Sinatra sees Earthing as a practical way to combat “common illnesses.” According to the article, Dr. Sinatra says “it has great promise for improving arrhythmia, blood pressure, blood viscosity, and flow, and energy production of heart cells.” Check out his pilot study “of the electrodynamics of blood” called the zeta potential. The results indicate that “Earthing improves viscosity and flow.”
If you read about the experiment Dr. Sinatra conducted, using dark-field microscopy that “produced dramatic changes” in blood cell aggregation “after only 40 minutes of Earthing.” Also look at the research on improvement in cortisol levels (of unstressed people) before and after grounding.
The studies are noted in the article. You may wish to read the article about what kind of shoes to wear to conduct the electricity of the Earth to your body properly, “Conduct Yourself Properly,” in the ESD Journal. According to that article, “The phenomenon of terrestrial magnetism results from the fact that the entire earth behaves as an enormous magnet.”
That article goes on to report that “the intensity of the magnetic field of the earth varies in different places on its surface (0.5 – 0.7 Gauss). The three electrical systems generated in the earth and atmosphere are known natural geophysical processes. One of them is in the atmosphere, and one is within the earth, flowing parallel to the surface of the earth.”
Grounding yourself to heal what’s out of balance
The whole idea of Earthing is about grounding yourself in a way that is supposed to normalize and help to heal whatever is out of balance in your body. According to the “Conduct Yourself Properly,” article, “The third [electrical system generated in the earth], which transfers an electric charge continuously between the atmosphere and the earth, flows vertically. The surface of the earth has a negative charge of electricity. Although the conductivity of air near the earth is small, air is not a perfect insulator, and the negative charge would drain off quickly if it were not being continuously replenished in some way.”
The research is showing people what kind of soles and shoes to wear that doesn’t block out the electricity from the Earth to your body. According to that “Conduct Yourself Properly,” article, “Modern shoe soles give us adequate wear (and protection) but they also impair the feeling of ground which is so important to the foot’s sensory response. The bottoms of our footwear are virtually ‘deadened’.”
