Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is on the right track as they present the new 2013 Festival Rep Season. FAU‘s Theatre and Dance Department has offered professional contracts to guest artists performing alongside their students in the full summer festival season of shows.
FAU students are learning how to work with the standards of Actors Equity Association and union professionals. These guest artists contacts are also wonderful for the professional actors having work in theatre locally, not having to travel the nation for summer theatre productions and giving them work at home in our ‘fun in the sun arts destination’.
“FAU‘s decision to offer guests artists contracts to professionals working alongside FAU Theatre and Dance students, who are perfecting their craft, is a win-win situation for all. A win-win for FAU, guests artists, students and the futures of FAU actors and dancers longevity in the entertainment business.” BroadwayGlobal.
FAU is on the right track, the hope that they soon offer SDC union guests contracts for Directors and Choreographers would bring the idea to the next level, giving students a chance to work with the working union leaders who could potentially hire their students after they have graduated. Working with union SDC Directors or Choreographers that have productions around the nation would give students the network needed to start their careers in the entertainment business. In fact SDC union for Directors and Choreographers has provided grant funding for school’s who offer SDC contract’s for professionals to work with students.
Theatre is a business. The fact that student Ryan Mahannah one of FAU’s theatre department students contacted me through Facebook shows Ryan understands the business aspect of promoting the actors and shows. Mr. Mahannah’s information shared for the Festival Rep shows also speaks well of his education at FAU. Networking is one of the most important elements of the business. You can have all the talent in the world but if they don’t know you are there, they can’t find you, your talents, or your productions.

Theatre Chat commends FAU and FAU’s Theatre and Dance Department for bringing in Guest Artists contracts and professionals to work alongside their FAU students. This expense helps support local professionals, while giving FAU students the opportunity to work with some of the best talents in Florida.
“The hope is that FAU will soon offer SDC Directors and Choreographers guest contracts giving opportunity for their dedicated students to work with professional directors and choreographers that could hire them for future productions. This would bring FAU up to the standards of other competing arts theatre and dance programs in the nation.” BroadwayGlobal.
