On May 23, the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council released their initial draft plan for restoring the gulf following extensive damage caused by the 2010 Macondo blowout and BP oil spill.
The Gulf will also have to “recover” from the unknown volumes of Corexit disbursed to visually minimize damage. This cosmetic fix only occurred at the surface, and is the subject of controversy as more and more humans and marine life continue to suffer.
Last night, RestoretheGulf.gov issued an update for the public on where to attend meetings and participate in the 30-day Public Comment Period for a plan that at least in theory should (help) fix the aforementioned blights.
The Draft Plan provides a framework to implement a region-wide restoration effort in a way that “restores, protects, and revitalizes the Gulf Coast region following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill,” RTG says.
They add that:
The Draft Plan establishes overarching restoration goals for the Gulf Coast region; provides details about how the Council will solicit, evaluate, and fund projects and programs for ecosystem restoration in the Gulf Coast region; outlines the process for the development, review, and approval of State Expenditure Plans; and highlights the Council’s next steps. The Council expects to release a Final Plan this summer.
RTG adds that, to ensure “robust public input throughout the entire process” the Council is hosting a series of public engagement sessions. The formal public comment period for the Draft Plan and associated documents began May 23, and ends June 24.
Louisiana residents can attend their public engagement session June 12 at 6:30 pm CST (doors open at 6:00) at the following location:
