Halo: Spartan Assault, a top-down action shooter developed by 343 Industries in conjunction with Vanguard Games. According to the official announcement on Halo Waypoint, the game will be “Available only for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.” No plans to bring the game to Xbox live Arcade on the 360 or the One have been announced at this time.
Halo: Spartan Assault will mark the first time a Halo game will be available on touch-based devices. And will provide “an accessible, pick-up-and-play experience for fans and newcomers alike.” From the announcement trailer it appears to have graphics similar to the Xbox 360 game Halo Wars, and animated cut scenes very similar to the videos seen on the Halo 4 Terminals.
The time frame this game takes place in is “Set between the events of “Halo 3” and “Halo 4,” “Halo: Spartan Assault” explores the first missions of the Spartan Ops program and dives deeper into the backstory of Human-Covenant wars.” According to the YouTube Description on the announcement trailer. The player will “Play through the eyes of either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis stationed aboard the UNSC Infinity as they fight in never-before-seen battles against Covenant forces.”
Spartan Assault is a bold new direction for the Halo series and time will tell if it plays off for the developers. The Developer, Vanguard Games is no stranger to top down twin-stick style games. The company is known for Gatling Gears and Greed Corp. Halo: Spartan Assault will be available this July on windows 8 devices.
