With opening day behind us, two clubs on the North East River are chomping at the bit to get sailing this season.
On April 20th, Hances Point Yacht Club (HPYC) celebrated their opening day with a flag raising, a little history lesson, and good eats and beverages enjoyed on the refurbished front porch, which had fell into disrepair over the years. The gathering also featured a burning of the socks, for luck, and a re-dedication of the newly refurbished work barge.
The North East River Yacht Club (NERYC) celebrated the beginning of the season with an open house on April 21st,it’s first race on May 4th, and the announcement of its summer junior sailing camp sessions, slated to begin June 17th.
The summer Racing season is right around the corner, starting with HPYC Friday Night Gentleman’s (and Gentlewoman’s) races, and informal night spent tooling around the markers starting at the end of May.
Also kicking off the season is the NERYC invitational set for June 1st. The race is slated to take place below the sightlines of the Turkey Point Lighthouse, with an awards ceremony after at the Yacht Club. The race features many different serious racing categories, as well as a cruisers class. More information is available at the NERYC.com website.
Also coming up, albeit later in the summer is the 5th annual, Walden Rigging, Sippy Cup, an overnight race from the North East River to the waters off Annapolis, MD, with an after part at the Port Annapolis Marina. This race takes place August, 2nd into August, 3rd, 2013.
Details according to a press release, “This is an overnight regatta, held the same weekend as the Governor’s Cup. Three Fleets – Regatta, Sippy Cup, and Big Gulp. The Regatta Fleet is open to any sailboats – entrants are sailing for fun and bragging rights, will not be scored and there is no trophy. Sippy Cup boats must have a PHRF rating of 220 or higher. Big Gulp boats must have a PHRF rating of 160-219. If you don’t have a PHRF rating, contact us and we’ll determine where you belong.
Race Course – North East River Red #2 off Rocky Point to 4s Flashing Green #91 of the main shipping channel, approx. ½ mile south of the main span of the Bay Bridge.
Hosted by Walden Rigging, this is primarily a regatta “fun race” encouraging small boats and everyone else to gain experience sailing at night.
Post-race party and awards (1st place for Sippy Cup and 1st place for Big Gulp) in Eastport – we recommend making slip reservations and spending the night. Bring some food to share and BYOB. Let’s celebrate our overnight sailing accomplishment together!
