A 45-year-old man named John Eastman in Connecticut has been accused of impersonating One Direction’s Harry Styles online and enticing underage girls to perform sex acts on video while Eastman pretended to be Styles under the online name Harry Styles 888. According to the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper, Eastman was arrested on May 30, 2013, after “he fled the city and was hauled back to the state by U.S. marshals who found him in Virginia.”
According to a Daily Mirror article published on May 31, 2013, Eastman “would sometimes offer concert tickets in exchange for children posing naked or performing sex acts online. Eastman’s webcam captured pornographic images of children believed to be as young as 5 years old while he spoke with them online, an arrest warrant stated. Computers allegedly belonging to Eastman were said to have hundreds of vile videos and pictures stored on them. The Waterbury Republican-American reports charges against him include employing a minor in an obscene performance.”
Styles (who is 19) and representatives for One Direction have not commented on this situation.
One Direction is the biggest-selling worldwide act to emerge from “The X Factor.” The group came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010 and has since had No. 1 hits and sold-out tours in several countries.
Styles is the member of One Direction who gets the most attention from fans and the media. He’s also the member of One Direction who has the most followers on Twitter.
Although there have been several people who have impersonated members of One Direction online, the accusations against Eastman are the most serious so far.
