Every now and then, there comes a challenging moment where you’ll be forced to either ‘ride with the tide’ or force a screeching halt! Tonight is that moment for fellow fans of the breakout hit, “The Soul Man”.
Has ‘The Soul Man’ sold his…?
Tonight on “The Soul Man” Rev. Boyce Ballentine will marry two women…to each other. “The Soul Man” is a fan favorite because it provides a humor break and shows the inside life of a preacher from an outside point of view. It’s most endearing because of it cleverly presents the hardship new Pastors’ face when thrust into newly appointed leadership.
The show is funny and caters to believers (well, the ones who don’t count it a sin to watch cable television). However, the show is also severely flawed. References to the members as ‘the flock’ wreak of writers who are clearly distant from their Pastor or who don’t go to church at all. Last week’s episode caught Rev. Ballentine in a round fisticuffs as he protected his wife’s honor.
The bulk of the episode was spent watching the ‘Punching Preacher’ handle his new found fame. At the end of the episode, Sister Ballentine took matters into her own hands and as the show closed with the same offender knocked out on the floor. It was funny and showed the thin line clergy and their families are forced to walk daily.
The Soul Man isn’t going to be an advocate nor bridge to pop culture for the church. Mrs. Ballentine spends most of the scenes in skin tight dresses flaunting her gorgeous figure. To the show’s credit, the 21st century Pastor’s wife is in fact in touch with her fashion sense and even her (dare anyone say it…) sexuality. So, the portrayal of Mrs. Ballentine may be more spot-on than offensive, depends on where you are.
Back to the wedding tonight. The plot pits the Pastor against his deacons. This is a plot ripped straight from church headlines, right? You know it! However it’s the debate of going against what the bible says that makes the deacons look more right than ever.
They’re GLAAD about it
With the recent victories in the Supreme Court and the backing of President Obama, the gay agenda is forging ahead full speed. Many church goers will be at church during tonight’s episode, but what happens when you get home? What happens next week? What’ll happen on Sunday?
Believers must never forsake their voice for the sake of entertainment, or even to remain in good standing with contemporaries. It’s time to rise up and take a stand, even at the risk of being labelled a bigot, a hater and a social pariah. Jesus commissioned believers with one message and task in Matt. 28:19,20.
