Being one of the individuals who didn’t really appreciate Heath Ledger’s talent until “The Dark Knight” rolled around has always felt awkward like trying to put on a pair of pants that’s two sizes too small. The Australian born actor would have turned 34 this past April and mostly made films that either fell under the radar or were about subjects that dodged typical fanfare and what you might consider your usual interests. Going through his work now, you can see that Ledger was really starting to come into his own right at the end of his all too short career, which is even more unfortunate than what can be said here. Being a huge Terry Gilliam fan, it’s with no shame admitting that “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and “The Brothers Grimm” are extremely fun fantasy films while Neil Armfield’s “Candy” is a riveting tale of addiction.
But these images aren’t as much about Ledger’s film work as they are about him making nearly every photograph that was taken of him memorable in some capacity. He seemed to dabble in several different artistic ventures and had moderate success in every outing that could have become something even greater over time. A personal favorite is him directing the Modest Mouse music video for “King Rat.” Not only that, but the man had style. His casual fashion sense made him seem classy as hell even if he was just going out to get a cup of coffee.
Heath Ledger was an extremely talented man and you can get a glimpse of his talent in the photographs he took, whether they were professionally shot for a photo shoot, behind the scenes while shooting a film, or just a candid photograph. Ledger seemed to make every moment in his short-lived life unique and these images are meant to highlight that.
Heath Ledger 01
I like to imagine the person behind the camera falling down and this was the pose Heath went with to check on their well being. It also looks like he mugged Charlie Chaplin for those shoes, which is a huge compliment.
Heath Ledger 02
Maybe it’s my love for David Cronenberg’s “Naked Lunch,” but I love this picture. That and it looks like it was taken in some secluded room in the depths of some rusted out submarine.
Heath Ledger 03
Let’s see what we’ve got going on the backyard; the water tower, a hole in the fence, and Heath Ledger as a next door neighbor. Maybe that’s Mister Rogers behind the camera.
Heath Ledger 04
Has anyone reading this ever not done this? It’s just rare seeing someone in the public eye do something like this. Ledger seems so loose and casual here. I blame the button-up sweater.
Heath Ledger 05
This seems like one hell of a get-together. A fancy dress party featuring booze and imaginary dates. Classic. Although that food looks like what’s left over when an artist paints something.
Heath Ledger 06
Probably my favorite image of the bunch. Not a fan of cigarette smoke since I’m allergic to it, but it can look bad ass. Throw in two six-shooters and an untied shoe you don’t give a damn about and you’ve got something awesome on your hands.
Heath Ledger 07
Is he trying to bite the apple in mid-air? Is it about to collide with his face? Not sure, but it almost looks like he’s going to prom or homecoming or something.
Heath Ledger 08
This almost seems like the same picture as the previous one only with a few extra years under the hood and the apple replaced with a pair of keys. Also, get in the damn car. This night isn’t going to rule itself.
Heath Ledger 09
I have no idea where this was taken, but the surroundings are just as important as Heath’s pose. You don’t see the invisible chair much anymore. Those sunglasses, black leather jacket, and blue jeans are enough for Joe Cool and Fonzie to get in a fight over who’s cooler.
Heath Ledger 10
Heath’s facial expression is priceless here and the motorcycle helmet only makes it better. I like to imagine that they’re riding a tricycle here.
Heath Ledger 11
I don’t know if that’s a pin striped suit jacket or a blazer, but I want it either way. I like the idea of this just being an everyday Polaroid taken of Heath that he signed just because. “That weird hang out session we had where we did nothing but stare at the wall for six hours deserves to be cherished forever. Take a picture and let me sign it so we can never forget it.”
Heath Ledger 12
This kind of blew my mind the first time I saw it. Heath Ledger was apparently crazy flexible and ridiculously so. The guy could bend himself in half and just not care about it. I hope he read the newspaper like this.
Heath Ledger 13
I like those baggy blue pants and his shirt only being buttoned in one place reminds me of Tweek from “South Park.” That right side of the image is what’s great though. The left side, “Oh, another photo shoot?” The right side: “I forgot to water my plants before I left this morning.”
Heath Ledger 14
That dog is strutting its ass off and Heath seems to be chasing it on what looks like a half-pipe. That brown sweater he’s wearing is matching the dog. I wonder if that was planned…?
Heath Ledger 15
So I guess this is from the same shoot as the dog. This makes me think of those stupid dancing movies (“If I stop dancing for just one day my heart will explode. Also, the rec center is being torn down because you’re fat.”) or like those guys that used to break dance on street corners.
Heath Ledger 16
So the Polaroid must have been taken in between takes of this? More one button awesomeness. Casual and classy. The red and white shoes were a nice touch. What if you came home one day and Heath Ledger had broken in but was just chilling on your couch like this?
Heath Ledger 17
I think this is something promoting “The Brothers Grimm,” but it’s always been one of my favorite Heath Ledger pictures. Matt Damon’s frown and Heath’s sense of delight on his face from wrapping what looks like a sweater around Matt’s mouth is just great.
Heath Ledger 18
This image was labeled as being from “Candy,” but it’s been so long that I can’t remember if it was in the movie or not. The aviator hat, goggles, and white scarf along with Ledger’s unusual expression make this image unique.
Heath Ledger 19
A behind the scenes photo from “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.” I mostly added this one for the gloves and ridiculous socks Heath is wearing and that it’s weird that they sort of match. Lily Cole looks really envious of them. Either that or she’s pissed that Heath stole her shoes.
Heath Ledger 20
I couldn’t not include a picture of Heath Ledger as The Joker from “The Dark Knight.” The film had too much of an impact on my life, but this is one of the rarer images floating around. It actually looks like a shot between takes during the opening bank robbery or perhaps a rare deleted scene that’ll never see the light of day from a Christopher Nolan film.
