When Army First Lieutenant Brandon Harker was deployed to Afghanistan last year, he left his beloved dog, Oakley, in the care of a friend. According to Harker, who discussed his story with Seattle Pets Examiner today, the friend instead gave away his dog – and Harker needs your help to ensure his safe return.
Army First Lieutenant Brandon Harker is committed to serving and protecting his country, but now he is the one who desperately needs some help.
“Oakley was given away or sold while I was deployed to Afghanistan,” Harker stated.
“I just returned from deployment on the eighteenth of July. My friend who was supposed to be watching him just told me ‘I got rid of him’ and that he ‘doesn’t know who has him.”
The sweet yellow Labrador retriever was either given away or sold in Lakewood, Washington, between Nov. 2012 and July 2013.
Harker added: “Oakley was supposed to stay with that friend while I was gone. If you could please help, it would be greatly appreciated.”
Oakley is two years and four months old. Harker has had the yellow Labrador retriever since he was eight weeks old. Oakley is microchipped and neutered.
“He has a very distinct coat color – with spots, even though he’s purebred. It’s very rare coloring,” Harker stated.
“I was told that Oakley was gone when I was on a layover coming back to the United States. I’ve had him since he was a puppy. It’s heartbreaking.”
Harker added: “My friend just said they ‘got rid of him’ – they never gave me any other explanation. He would say ‘I don’t know who we gave him to’ and ‘I don’t know their phone number.’ I just want him back.”
The heartbroken first lieutenant describes Oakley as happy-go-lucky.
“He thinks he’s a lap dog, even though he weighs 100 pounds,” he recalled lovingly.
This dog is very sorely missed. If you are in possession of this missing dog and did not realize where he came from, please contact Harker at the email address below. If you have not seen him, please share this story to help this soldier finally have a happy homecoming.
Harker also spoke with KCPQ 13 Fox today, hoping that their news coverage will bring his friend home.
