A critical part of homeschooling is planning. While there are many calendars and other planners available, few if any address the needs of homeschool families with multiple children. Homeschool Planet is an online planner that is specifically designed for the busy homeschool family. I had an opportunity to beta-test this software and it is impressive.
Homeschool planet is more than just a calendar. It is a family planner. You can enter in just the homeschooled kids or you can set up the calendar to cover everyone in the family.
The planner allows you to add in appointments, club and church meetings, and everything that you would add to a normal calendar.
For each homeschooled student, you set up classes and specific times for tasks, like reading independently or quite time. Every child is assigned a unique color so you can see a color coded calendar at your fingertips. In addition to setting up classes, the program also generates a transcript for you. For anyone that has had to put together a high school transcript for their high school student, you will appreciate this feature. It is an amazing time saver.
Homeschool Planet is flexible and very functional. It allows you to print out a weekly calendar for each child. The calendar shows the child everything they are supposed to accomplish during the week. You can set up folders or bins for each child for every day of the week. By placing each day’s work in a folder, you help your child to become self sufficient.
You can email todo lists and schedules to your family members. This helps them keep track of appointments and other commitments. If you are away from your computer, you can send them a text instead of an email. This is a very helpful feature. Families with busy teens can make sure they stay on track with their studies and commitments.
While the planner is not designed to put your homeschool on auto pilot, it helps tremendously when you need to tailor your teaching schedule around appointments, homeschool activities and other commitments. It can be accessed from anywhere, as long as you have internet access via a smart phone or computer.
The price of Homeschool Planet is reasonable. It is available for $65 for a yearly subscription. A free trial is available. It is available through the Home School Buyers Co-op.
Through the beta test, I used this program to my homeschool last year. Homeschool planet allowed me to organize my homeschooling schedule around cancer surgery and treatments, doctor appointments, homeschool co-op days, park days, 4-H activities, and college admissions meetings. The program is easy to use and customize. I highly recommend it.
