The hot and steamy languid days that define Houston summers are great for lazy days by the pool. But we have arrived at the mid-summer mark– where in the midst of the peak of the heat, we are challenged to keep busy and make the most of our remaining summer days. Fortunately for us, we live in the bustling metropolis of Houston, Texas, where there are so many things to do…indoors!
Here are five places to go right now that are fun and educational and cool enough (literally and figuratively) that your teen will even leave his or her spot by the pool or lawn sprinkler to join in.
1. HMAAC– The Houston Museum of African-American Culture has a full menu of offerings for the summer. The museums latest exhibits are open from 10 to 5 daily. But also, if you want a easy and engaging activity for early evening, HMAAC’s film series are always avant garde experiences that you will be discussing for days!
TONIGHT: QFest – All in the Family: A Showcase of Queer African American Shorts– 8 pm, General Admission: $10
2. Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s Annual Citywide African American Artists Exhibition opens TODAY! This juried exhibition features 47 artists of the African Diaspora in the greater Houston area and will be on view through August 25. An award ceremony for the girst, second, and third prize-winning artists takes place August 23.
TONIGHT: Opening Reception- 17th Annual Citywide African American Artists Exhibition– 6 to 8 pm. Free Admission. Glassell School of Art, 5101 Montrose.
3. Houston Museum of Natural Science Sugarland summer exhibit, Amusement Park Science, runs through September 14th. In light of the recent tragedy at the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park just last week, HMNS’s exhibit is a very timely opportunity to learn the physics behind how roller coasters work, and about the fun and the risks of thrill riding these marvels of construction.
