The Houston Forensic Sciences Center (new crime lab) presented the Mayor’s Report to City Council May 1. LGC chair Scott Hochberg gave a brief overview of the purpose of the Technical Advisory Board and the procedure by which the members were selected.
Houston’s unique approach to creating an Independent Crime lab is in a deliberate process the required procedures for establishing the charter of the Houston Forensics Sciences Center, then appointment of a Board, a Board Chair, and a Technical Advisory Group (TAG). The TAG will advise the Board and staff on policies, new technologies, and proper methods.
Mr. Hochberg explained the selection process. A 3-member task force of Board members with scientific expertise produced a Resolution that addressed all necessary actions for appointing and selecting a board. Pursuant to the resolution, the working group launched a detailed search process that lasted several months, and accepted recommendations from the Houston Police Department, fellow scientists, and others in the forensics community.
Mr. Enrique Barrera was designated to be the liaison between the Board and the TAG. He introduced the members individually to City Council. Dr. Bruce Budowle, David Epstein, Darrell L. Lewis, Dr. Antonios Mikos, Dr. Clifford Spiegelman, Dr. Elizabeth Todd, Dr. Surgur Srihari, and Dr. Bobby Wilson. The Board was to meet immediately following the Council meeting to begin its deliberations.
