Is the severe stomach bug caused by vegetables?
You might already know to thoroughly wash and trim your vegetables before eating them. Bear in mind that when you purchase prepackaged salads and other prepackaged fresh vegetables, they have not been that carefully cleaned. Many disease outbreaks blamed on fresh vegetables are really due to eating prepackaged fresh vegetables.
What are prepackaged vegetables? They’re the salads and other fresh vegetables you get in the produce section at your supermarket that come in clear bags or boxes, presumably ready to eat. Sometimes they are designated as “prewashed,” a term that unfortunately does not really mean they are actually clean. The current cyclospora outbreak has been traced to prepackaged salad mix.
You know the old saying: there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Prepackaged salads seem like a great timesaver because you don’t have to do the washing and trimming, but when you put the responsibility for ensuring food safety into the hands of others who don’t care about your health and well-being, you are at risk. Prepackaged salads are only a timesaver if you will save the couple of minutes it takes to wash your own greens and not have to compensate for it with three hours sitting in the emergency waiting room and several days staying home from work. Many disease outbreaks related to prepackaged vegetables confirm it—ready-to-eat salads are not always safe.
Let’s think about why this is so. When you bring home a fresh head of lettuce, even if it is lightly contaminated with some germ it is not likely to make you as sick as if you bought that same lettuce “prewashed” in a bag. A head of lettuce is exposed to the air, which can make it harder for germs to survive. Germs thrive in damp, enclosed environments like the inside of the sealed prepackaged salad bag. Inside that bag, germs multiply rapidly.
How to avoid the stomach bug
If you’re going to take a chance on a vegetable, make it one that you prepare yourself or else go ahead and soak those supposedly ready-to-eat salad greens in water with dry or liquid clay added for at least 10 minutes before eating. To be extra careful, soak them longer than that—as much as half an hour—and rub the clay water into the surface of the greens. The clay will kill the germs the processors left behind if you are scrupulous about making sure that every millimeter of salad is in contact with the clay water. The fastest and easiest thing is just to avoid prepackaged fresh foods and prepare your own, although I soak my fresh vegetables in clay water anyway, just for added protection.
If you’re one of those people who feel you just can’t afford the time to clean your vegetables and must eat prepackaged salads, then do yourself a favor and keep a natural disease remedy on hand. Oregano oil is the most potent, although by the time you feel really sick, you probably won’t be able to stomach it, and you won’t want to throw it up because it gives a burning sensation; better to take it as soon as you eat the risky food. Take 2 or 3 drops in some water if you want to try it. It will even kill germs that antibiotics can’t kill.
Barlean’s Olive Leaf Complex is the next best choice, and it’s more palatable; it tastes like cough syrup and kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Take a couple of tablespoonsful if you’re already getting sick, or just one tablespoonful if you want to prevent illness.
Liquid clay is good if you take enough. Drink 3-5 ounces and drink plenty more water afterward to prevent constipation. To treat the nausea, try hot or cold ginger tea with a little stevia in it; it’s remarkably effective in most cases.
Since these are natural remedies, you can repeat them again in a few hours if you’re still not well yet. The clay, especially, is very mild. If you’re on any kind of medication, though, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before taking these at all, because sometimes even foods and natural remedies can interfere with prescription drugs. The clay, for example, removes toxic substances from the body, and most prescription drugs are toxic. So never take clay at the same time you take your medications. Separate the two by at least an hour.
Don’t buy the propaganda
When you read the headlines saying that a new virulent disease is “linked to” some vegetable, please remember that the implication is patently false. Vegetables do not cause disease; they prevent it. The thousands of beneficial substances in fresh vegetables are so health-giving that they could be sold as medicine, and in other places around the world they sometimes are. Arguments to the contrary mask an underlying conflict of interest.
If the FDA were really concerned about keeping you healthy, it would not insist on allowing food producers to sell you genetically modified food without identifying it as such on the label. It would not okay dangerous drugs based on fabricated or ethically compromised research that Big Pharma pays for under the table. It would not okay foods, drugs, and substances that are banned in every other country around the world. It would not force food producers to apply chemicals or sterilization treatments that kill the beneficial substances in healthful foods, like making almond growers fumigate or heat their nuts. It would not make it illegal to sell fresh raw milk and eggs, products it has also unfairly blamed for disease outbreaks.
Don’t buy into the ridiculous propaganda suggesting that fresh fruits and vegetables will kill you. If agencies that profit indirectly from your illness tell you not to eat something, they are not trying to be helpful; they are trying to increase their profits and their leverage. The FDA wants to outlaw vitamins and supplements for the same reason. Once all the beneficial foods and supplements are gone, we will all have no recourse but to rely on the healthcare system to stay healthy, and that system is not even oriented toward health. It is oriented toward disease management, which is the most profitable stance that the healthcare industry can take. If you have to keep going back to your doctor over and over to manage a chronic disease, the healthcare industry makes a lot more money than if you get completely well and don’t have to go back.
Safeguard your health by eating fresh raw fruits and vegetables. Just wash them yourself to make sure they’re really clean. Do that, and unless you are immunocompromised, your risk of contracting any disease germ that happens to be on your produce will be pretty much nil.
