Happy Memorial day weekend! With that comes the start of steamy weather here in South Florida. Below I illustrate the steps on how to do a Fish Tail Braid also known as Herring bone or Fishbone . Because you want to look cute while trying to stay cool.
You can french braid your hair from your hairline to your neck then continue with a fish tail braid down to your ends. Or you can grab all your hair (photos attached are this method) and Fish Tail down to your ends.
Many celebrities are wearing this look now, mostly seen on the side, loose and messy. Down the center, on the side, sleek or messy either way this style looks trendy and complicated (but it’s not!)
So high tail it to the steps to see how the Fish Tail Braid is done!
Step 1. Part hair
Part your hair straight down the center giving you 2 large sections. Using a comb to part your hair evenly would be a clean sleek look. If you’d prefer the tousled celebrity look, though, simply part it with your hands. (that’s how we did it in the picture.)
Step 2. Pull thin piece place in center
Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the left section. Pull it over the top of the left section, which is the center of step 1. Now grasp it under the right section. In other words, the strand of hair has gone over the left section and finishes under the right section.
The smaller the sections the more elaborate this style looks, people will think this took you hours, but it’s really simple!
Step 3. Pull a thin piece from right side & repeat
Pull a thin section from the right side and repeat Step 2 . Pull a skinny strand of hair from the outside of the right section, pull it over the right section, then weave it under the left section.
In general, try to use the same thickness for each strand throughout so your braid looks even.
Step 4. keep weaving down
Keep alternating sides, weaving over and under, until you reach the bottom of the braid. Pulling tightly makes this method easier, you might want to start that way before graduating to the loose look.
Step 5. Tie it off
Tie off the end with an elastic. Take a strand from the ends and wrap around elastic to cover it and secure with a bobby pin under the braid. Or add a cute ribbon, barrette or charm to give it some personality if you’d like!

To accomplish this, use your fingers to gently massage into the strands a little to loosen it slightly.
Very long hair, can be tucked into a bun, weaving it around your head or across the front, etc.
If you have slightly shorter hair, just fishtail it as far as you want.
