An electronic resume is a resume that has been prepared for sending through a computer and reading on a computer. Despite the singular definition of the term, the electronic resume encompasses a number of similar but not quite the same documents.
For instance, the electronic resume that is created for sending through email should not be formatted the same as the electronic resume that is meant to be submitted to online databases. Although these documents share the same goals and basic foundational principles, there are certain unique considerations that must be made depending on the purpose of the electronic resume.
Principles of an Effective Electronic Resume
Most electronic resumes are intended to be short, digestible, and to the point, even more so than standard resumes put to paper. However, electronic resumes must accomplish all of these aims while remaining clear, transparent, and relevant to the posting. Here are tips for implementing some of the most important rules to keep in mind during the creation of an electronic resume:
* First, an effective electronic resume must be accessible to all potential readers. As such, an effective electronic resume must be saved in a format that all or almost all computers can read and open. As such, Rich Text Format is one of the best options due to its cross-platform appeal, while more obscure formats such as OpenDocument is less desirable. Resumes saved in one of the Microsoft Office formats tend to be quite accessible, though not as good in this regard as Rich Text Format.
* Second, the format of the electronic resume requires adjustment depending on its intended purpose. Not all databases and websites support the usage of fonts, layouts, and less common symbols, meaning that the usage of these elements is either pointless or outright counter-productive due to the code being mangled in the transition process. As a result, if the electronic resume is meant to be uploaded, trim it down to the bare basics. Similarly, doing the same for electronic resumes to be sent through email is also helpful due to saving space and thereby cutting down on reader irritation.
* As ever, the content of the electronic resume must remain clear, concise, and to the point. Clear means that there must be no attempt at obfuscation, concise means that its usage of language must be efficient due to space shortages, while to the point means that the content of the resume must fit the resume’s intended purpose. However, electronic resumes must also meet additional requirements unique to their medium. For instance, some readers might use software to search through submitted resumes for certain keywords, meaning that research needs to be done beforehand to find these keywords before integrating them into the resume where appropriate.
As a final note, be sure to test the completed electronic resume prior to actual use. If it is intended to be sent through email for perusal, test it by including the electronic resume in an email addressed to the inbox. Similarly, if it is meant to be posted on a database, spend the time to check up on it and fix up any mistakes once the completed electronic resume has been uploaded and posted.
