How many times have you turned the pages of a magazine or clicked through pictures online and envied someone else’s curls? No judgement here, we all do it. But the next time you’re admiring someones hair, let go of the guilt because you too can have the curls another girl envies.
Many of us have kinks and coils that are less defined than our curly sisters. But a method called shingling will allow your curls to come through.
‘Shingling’ is a manual way of turning kinks into curls by capturing hair in its wet stage and smoothing a ‘holding’ product from root to end to maximize curl definition. You achieve this by smoothing gel with your fingers (mostly index and thumb) into small sections of hair until you feel its totally sleek, then you release it to clump into curls.
Step 1: On wet hair, make manageable sections(this may be 4 or more sections depending on the thickness of your hair)
Step 2: Apply a curling custard, gel or hair lotion with your thumb and index finger in downward strokes. This step allows you to form the curl
Step 3: Once you see the curls form from the previous step, comb through with the denman brush. This step defines and sets the curl.
Step 4: Move on to next section and admire your individually unique curls.
Take a deep breath and remember all you have to do is section hair like you’re detangling, take manageable sections and smooth down the hair(using your index and thumb fingers) with your custard, lotion or gel and set the curl by combing with a denman brush.
