The huge concert to benefit The One Fund Boston takes place on Thursday, May 30. Many people were hoping that it would be televised nationally, but the networks decided not to carry it. Instead, people across America can watch a livestream of the concert on Billboard.com or iHeartRadio.com. The benefit begins at 7 p.m. EST on Thursday.
The Boston Strong Concert, which benefits the Boston marathon bombing victims, will feature performances by Aerosmith, Jason Aldean, James Taylor, New Kids on the Block, Boston, Jimmy Buffett, Carole King, Dane Cook, Godsmack, J. Geils Band, Steven Wright and many more. Proceeds from the concert will support The One Fund Boston, which was founded by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to aid the people “most affected by the tragic events that occurred in Boston on April 15,” stated a press release announcing the benefit.
During the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, two pressure cooker bombs exploded at 2:49 pm, killing 3 people and injuring 264 others. The bombs were set off about 13 seconds and 210 yards apart, near the finish line on Boylston Street. On April 18, The FBI released photographs and surveillance video of two suspects that were identified later that day as the Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Shortly after the FBI released the images, the suspects allegedly killed an MIT police officer, carjacked an SUV, and initiated an exchange of gunfire with the police in Watertown, Mass. During the exchange, an MBTA police officer was critically injured, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was injured and escaped. An unprecedented manhunt ensued on April 19, with thousands of police searching a 20-block area of Watertown.
Millions of people tuned into FOX News and CNN during the massive manhunt. Around 7 pm, shortly after the “shelter-in-place” advisory was rescinded, a Watertown resident discovered the suspect hiding in a boat in his back yard. Dzhokhar was arrested and taken to a hospital shortly thereafter. He remains in a federal prison hospital in Ayer, Mass., recovering from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Another benefit concert took place on Wednesday, May 29. Music forces from around the country joined forces in Oklahoma City in a benefit concert for the victims of the deadly tornado that struck the state last week. The “Healing in the Heartland” concert aired on NBC and featured Blake Shelton, Usher, Reba McEntire, Ryan Tedder, OneRepublic, Miranda Lambert and others.
