World Environmental Day will be observed on June 5 and this year’s focus will be on wasting food with the slogan Think eat save.
Ian Somerhalder, the Most Responsible Celebrity at the International Green Awards for 2012, gives his ideas on how we can eliminate food waste ‘It is absolutely nuts that 34 percent of a food is thrown away. That translates into 483 billion.’
Wasting food is a very personal issue –it is not the fault of government or business it lays on our shoulders. It is possible to easily change our way of thinking by making conscious choices of the food we purchase. Buying just the amount that we need for the week and not what we see or want. This simple act will eliminate food waste and will also reduce the amount of water and chemicals and land that are used in the process.
Ian Somerhalder will be United Nations Environmental Programs (UNEP) Expert of the Day and will be responding to your questions about his work with the UNEP through Twitter by using the hashtag #AskIan or by sending him an email at the address firstname.lastname@example.org.
The ISF encourages its participants to reduce their ‘foodprint’ by making June 5 a ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ and then by aiming for a ‘Waste Free Week’ The ISF also encourages it’s members to use the social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to alert your friends and family to the importance ot World Environment Day. Please use the UNEF’s ‘For Our Environment’ thunderclap in your tweets and your status’s for emphasis.
Let’s make this a successful World Environment Day (Week) by alerting as many people as possible to World Environment Day and the need to eliminate food waste.
