What type of headaches are there?
There are three types of headaches which must be addressed we have the typical headache, the tension headache and the chronic migraine. The first type tends to take place for many reasons from not getting enough sleep to coming down with cold symptoms. The tension headaches will occur when a person becomes stressed over certain issues causing them to be overwhelmed about the situation. The chronic migraine headache is actually one of the most common types. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, there are 36 million persons [that includes men, women, and children] in the United States that suffer from chronic migraines. What is more astonishing is, statistics show a 40% chance of migraines being genetically passed from one generation onto the next.
What has been interesting to medical professionals, researchers and patients are the many types of chronic migraines as there is not just one but many. Because of these many varieties, it gives more justification of why so many patients have various symptoms and comparisons when experiencing a migraine period. The various migraine types experienced are migraine with aura, migraine without aura, Hemiplegic migraine, Ophthalmoplegic migraine, Retinal migraine, Basilar Artery migraine, and Abdominal migraine.
In the case of migraines without auras, a patient can experience the immediate pain or head throbbing without any type of warning that can be quite disturbing. In the situation of the migraine with aura type is the case example when a patient will experience a feeling (i.e. an aura) before the migraine will begin. The Hemiplegic migraine is defined as “a rare, neurological disease. HM is classified as a migraine with aura accompanied by motor weakness.” according to the Hemiplegic Migraine Foundation. The Ophthalmoplegic migraine is another rare and quite severe type of chronic migraine that patients do experience. This migraine type is also known as ocular migraines it does affect the eye area when pain takes place. What will take place within the eye area during the migraine occurrence are the swelling, drooping, and weakness or at times, there can actually be no feeling at all in the area.
The Retinal migraine is considered a rarity type of migraine due to the common symptoms it has with ocular migraines. This type of migraine goes one-step further as it affects the retina. How this happens is by causing a change in vision whether it is of partial or complete loss first and then the migraine will begin. The Basilar Artery migraine has been defined in which the patient can have difficulty in standing, walking, or balance overall. There can be other issues such as experiencing the ringing in ears including the matter of nausea. Lastly, the Abdominal migrainecan be experienced in both adults and children as expressed by WebMD. Interestingly, WebMD has stated, “Children that experience abdominal migraines typically develop migraine headaches when they get older.” That is an interesting genetic factor about this type migraine.
What are migraine triggers?
Many migraine patients have difficulty with various items, as they will experience a migraine with or without an aura. At this time, migraine triggers that continue to cause migraines are things such as caffeine, computer screens, types of food, specific scents, types of weather, chocolate, hormones, being out in the sun, brain surgery, cigarette smoke, medication types, and more items are added as patients speak with their doctors because of their unique differences.
