The city of Sarasota offers many artistic and cultural venues, with locals and tourists sharing a great appreciation for the arts. Professional artists show their talent and skill in galleries, but there’s a special place in this city where everyone can get into the creative action. At Painting with a Twist, beginners, or folks who haven’t had much opportunity to make anything artistic, can come and enjoy painting and have a wonderful time. This business is a social meeting place, where you can enjoy a fun evening out. You can join an open class and make new friends. You can also arrange for a private adult party with your own group of friends for a special occasion, such as a bachelorette party or bridal shower, a girls night out, or a team building experience for colleagues from work. No official celebration needed; it can just be a fun get-together. It’s a great place to give a birthday party for children too, from ages 7 and up.
You can view the painting calendar online to choose a class to join. You may call the studio to plan a private party for your group. It only takes a minimum of ten people to reserve a private party. Private parties don’t cost anything extra, just the normal price for a class, depending upon the length of the class you choose, either two hours or three hours.
There is a fabulous online gallery of art designs that is growing each month, more than 2500 paintings for people to choose from, when planning a private party. Painting with a Twist owners also choose from this large collection of paintings when planning their open classes each month. There is a request list so people can ask for a painting they love to be taught in an open class.
There is lively music playing, and adults may bring their favorite wine or other beverages, as well as food and refreshments to munch. That’s the twist that goes along with the painting!
Painting with a Twist is a new business in Sarasota, open less than a year. Sheri Penxa and Hope Kinney are the two partners who own this franchise. Kinney and Penxa are connected as friends and family, sharing grandchildren.
Before starting this business, Penxa was semi-retired, and Kinney was the Director of a Head Start program. Both were interested in education, but neither of the women were artists. The idea for Penxa and Kinney to open the business started spontaneously last summer. Penxa’s daughter works at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. She had been to the St. Petersburg location of Painting with a Twist with her work associates, and they had a great time, so she invited her mother and friends to come up and paint in an open class. They enjoyed the experience, and about a month later, came back to take a second class.
“We just talked on the way home and started to work the numbers,” said Kinney. “We knew that Sarasota needed something like this,” said Penxa.
In the Fall, they traveled to New Orleans, to meet Cathy Deano and Renee Maloney, the founders of the Painting with a Twist corporation. The original business concept was called Corks N Canvas, founded in 2007. Deano and Maloney had four locations in the Greater New Orleans Area, then began franchising the business as Painting with a Twist in 2009. At present there are now 85 franchises all over the country. The company headquarters are in Louisiana. The company maintains the artwork copy rights, and works with each new franchise location to help them get started, and to maintain the integrity of the brand. The video with this article shows the Painting with a Twist concept.
“The corporate offices have a team of people that worked with us through the entire opening,” Kinney said. “They were on the phone with us each week. They supported us through the whole process of getting started.” Extended family members pitched in, helping with painting, building shelves, whatever needed to be done.
The partners opened the Sarasota location on February 15th, 2013. Hope Kinney focuses on marketing. Sheri Penxa works on day to day management of the business.
There are two studio spaces, so two different classes can be held there at the same time. Chelsey Curtin, Leah Macey, Truman Adams and Sarah Dees are artists who instruct the classes. Hope Kinney, Nicole Pfeffer, (Sheri Penxa’s daughter) and Sheri Penxa are the assistants for now.
In addition to the regular classes scheduled, there are some special events coming up this month.
One important goal of the PWAT franchises is to give back to local communities. Painting with a Purpose is the way this is continually accomplished. Each month, franchises offer a class which will benefit a local charity. At the end of the evening, half of all the money paid for the class is donated to the organization. In 2011, more than $80,000 was raised to help local charities by the Painting with a Twist franchises. As the franchises grow, the donations grow bigger each year.
This month, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, from 6 to 9 pm, Painting with a Purpose will support The Florida Center for Early Childhood : Healthy Families Sarasota Program. The Florida Center for Early Childhood is a nationally accredited nonprofit organization providing an array of comprehensive therapeutic services, clinical interventions, prevention and early education programming for children and families. Half of the class proceeds will be given to this organization. Reserve a seat for the class here.
Another special event this month is a class that has become very popular in other franchises, now offered for the first time in Sarasota. On Saturday, June 22, 2013, from 6 pm to 9 pm you can join the Paint your own Pet class. You Email a jpeg of your pet, and it will be pre-sketched on your canvas and ready for you to paint when you arrive to class. Artists will move around the room helping painters individually, as they create their own personal painting. Artist Sarah Dees will lead the class. Reserve a seat for the class here.
There are classes for kids too! Summer Camp days are offered from June 12th through August 16th. Prices are as follows:
- A 1.5 hour painting class is $25. It starts at 9:30 and goes until 11 am.
- A 2 hour painting class is $35. It starts at 9:30 and goes until 11:30 am.
- A 4 hour class will include lessons on various topics, games, and pizza to finish out the day. A 4 hour class costs $50. It starts at 9 am and goes until 1 pm.
If you sign up for four classes during this summer you will receive a $25 gift certificate for a fifth class. Check out the calendar to reserve a seat for Summer Camp.
