In recent days we have had many well known celebrities who have been attacked for what they did, expressed, or verbally related. All because it hurt somebody’s feelings. Hurting somebody’s feelings, we all know, is wrong; if they were hurt. This though, has something more significant attached to it. Freedom of speech is our right as a United States citizen, guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. However, all our freedoms are limited if they infringe on the freedoms of others. If our idea to free speech is to keep other people quiet, then we have not understood the concept of freedoms.
Freedom does not mean anarchy. Freedom means we have rights, but those rights have legal boundaries; if we cross those boundaries, then we no longer have Freedom. Paula Deen is the latest casualty of freedom. She may not been attacked to stifle her free speech, but to stifle her business freedom. Many more people have stood up for her than attacked her. She has exercised her freedom to become wealthy, an entrepreneur, and her speech. But yet they do not attack her for what she has said in the present, but what she has said 27 years ago. Really? Doesn’t anybody have a better quality of life anymore than to try to discredit someone else using their past? Why not attack big business for supporting slave labor, or inappropriate business practices or being anti-God? You cannot, in this country and according to the Constitution, stifle anybody’s speech; unless it LEGITIMATELY harms a person, entity, or the security of the country. What she said in the past doesn’t doesn’t fit these categories.
We seem to have this idea that Freedom, whatever it is, is only for me, and no one else. And we seem to have this idea if some one else is doing better financially than us, it must not be legal gain. We also have this idea that it is a free country let’s do or say something about someone else to destroy them and embarrass them. Well, we have really gone too far with “freedoms”. Our only guaranteed freedoms are listed in the U.S Constitution:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” First Amendment of the U.S Constitution.
These are the only guarantees we have. We have no right to do the same as citizens, because we the citizens are the government. It is time we concentrate on things that are really important in our lives, rather than figure out how we could destroy other peoples lives. Let’s do that before it is too late.
