Insomniac Games has brought games exclusive to Playstation consoles and handhelds for 16 years straight so it was a surprise when the studio announced the multi-platform title, FUSE. However, eyebrows were really raised when Sunset Overdrive was revealed as an Xbox One exclusive during Microsoft’s E3 presser. CEO Ted Price explained the decision in a post on the studio’s website discovered Sunday.
“It may surprise some of our longtime fans that we have partnered with Microsoft Studios to develop Sunset Overdrive exclusively for Xbox One,” Price wrote in a letter to fans on the Insomniac Games website. “When we first began discussing this idea with Microsoft, we were initially hesitant to shift back into an exclusive arrangement. But as the Microsoft team began introducing us to the abilities and philosophies driving the development of Xbox One, we knew that Sunset Overdrive was a perfect fit. The Xbox One and Xbox Live will support our ambitions to create an ongoing two-way dialogue with our community. It will also allow us to have quicker production cycles, enabling timely content updates for new weapons, characters, storylines and even pop culture-relevant content like memes based on social commentary.”
Price went on to say that Insomniac Games will remain an independent developer despite the deal with Microsoft and will continue to release games on platforms that it feels is the best fit.
The comment about the Xbox One allowing quickier production cycles and timely content updates does provide a little bit of insight about the next-gen console. Microsoft has not revealed much on if or how its developer policies will change from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One and Sony has been quick to take advantage by touting its Indie Developer friendly policies for the PS4.
Microsoft is expected to reveal more of its Xbox One policies during a BUILD developer conference at the end of June.
