Forget all those sugar (and other nonsense) ridden ‘health’ drinks you can buy for silly amounts of money, the best summer drinks are just a few slices away! My favorite is lime & cucumber and it’s a great place to start, so here is a quick guide. Other great combos are strawberry & lime, melon & lime, berry medley (any mix of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries), ginger & lime. Yes lime goes with everything!
Start by washing the cucumber and slicing them into thin slices. If they are large, chop each slice in half. Cucumbers are a very refreshing addition to water and can be paired with almost any other fruit to add depth of flavor.
Cucumbers are a great source of Vitamin K, C, potassium and magnesium.
Slice a lime, also into thin (ish) slices. Keep the end too as that has lots of juice.
Limes are of course a great source of vitamin C.
Cut slices in half
Cut both the limes and cucumber slices in half, this allows for more juices to escape once they are floating in the water.
You only need two or three slices of each for a glass. If you’re making a pitcher cut up a whole lime and half a large cucumber. You can’t really put too much in the water as you can always dilute the water with more water in each glass if it’s too flavorful. Just makes it last longer!
Add slices to water
I like to make a pitcher and leave it in the fridge. It is especially good the next day!
Add your cucumber slices to the water. When adding the lime to the water, give them a bit of a squeeze to help let the juices out, but not enough so they don’t look pretty in case you want to have the pitcher out on the table! Squeeze the end piece into the water, but do not add that part to the pitcher.
Give the water a good few stirs to get the flavors mixing and then let sit for at least half an hour. Keep it in the refrigerator and you can add more water when it gets low, as the limes and cucumbers will have more flavor to give.
Should last a few days in the fridge, discard earlier if you are drinking a lot and the flavors are gone.
Pour into glass
After about half an hour, pour into a glass, adding a few slices of cucumber if you are looking for some nice presentation! You’ll have plenty of flavor without the slices, but it does look nice.
For a refreshing finishing touch, add some ice. You now have a delicious, fresh, healthy drink that is infused with all sorts of goodness and flavor, with no sugar, preservatives or artificial colors in sight!
