This is the exciting premise of S.L. Morgan’s new YA fantasy romance, Ancient Guardians: The Legacy of the Key. We interviewed S.L. to find out more about her book, her writing life and her publishing journey.
Thank you for this interview, SL. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
Thanks for having me! Well, for starters, I’d like to think that there’s never a dull moment when I’m around. I’m known for having a very energetic and enthusiastic personality, and I have a passion for adventurous, outdoor activities. I’m a wife, a mother, and now, a published author.
In October of 2011, I thought, “Hey, I should write a book.” And so began a life-changing experience. It’s been a very surreal experience, and it’s great to be able to share my imagination with the world.
Can you tell us briefly what your book is about?
Ancient Guardians: The Legacy of the Key is novel that puts an interesting spin on the theory, ‘Does life exists outside of the boundaries of Earth.’
In The Legacy of the Key, The Guardians are from Pemdas, another dimension; and they are sworn to protect the people of Earth from threats from other worlds. They are forced to reveal their secret presence on Earth when Reece Bryant’s life becomes threatened. Unbeknownst to her, she is the link between Earth and all other worlds and dimensions in existence. Everything changes when she is brought into their enchanting dimension. Not only will she fall in love with Pemdas, but she will fall in love with Levi Oxley, one of her personal Guardians, putting her life in greater danger than ever before.
Why did you choose your particular genre?
I’ve always enjoyed reading fantasy and sci-fi books. They are enjoyable to read, and you never know where they will take you. Writing in this genre allowed me to tap into my imagination, and let me explore how creative I could actually be when the sky was the limit.
What was your greatest challenge writing this book?
My greatest challenge was weaving the paranormal aspect of this book with the seventeenth century time period on Earth.
Are you published by a traditional house, small press or are you self-published?
I chose to self-publish. It has been an amazing experience, and I am enjoying every minute of it.
Was it the right choice for you?
The only drawback I have is that self-publishing slows my writing process down. Sometimes it can be difficult to switch gears between using my left brain and right brain, but all-in-all I believe it was the right choice for me.
How are you promoting your book thus far?
The majority of my book promotions have been via social media. Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, blog tours, and giveaways have proven to be extremely helpful to me.
How is that going for you?
I have noticed that when I am not actively marketing and promoting the book, sales will fall off. It definitely requires constant attention to get the word out. While editing my second book, and preparing to edit the third, I am making time throughout the day to stop and interact on the social media sites.
Can you tell us one thing you have done that actually resulted in one or more sales?
I noticed an increase in using Amazon’s KDP select program, having giveaways on Goodreads served to increase sales also.
Do you have another job besides writing?
Aside from writing, I am a stay-at-home mom to my three kids. So I guess you could say that I have two full-time jobs.
If you could give one book promotion tip to new authors, what would that be?
Be a part of blog tours! You will reach an audience that you may have never reached on your own. There are so many wonderful book blog sites, and a lot of readers and reading groups out there who follow them. When you get a fair and honest review on your book, these potential readers can easily determine if your book is for them. You really need to market your book to its best target audience, and the blog tours do just that!
What’s next for you?
My second book is currently undergoing its edit, and I’m hopeful it will be published late this summer. I’ve written the third book, and finished writing the fourth book a few weeks ago. I wasn’t sure if there would be a fifth book in this series or not, but the other day an idea came to me, so it looks as though my characters are going to keep me busy for quite a while.
