“We of the Fantastic Four did not choose to be “super-heroes”. We are just ordinary people who fate selected to be more than human. Unfortunately, or fortunately, we did not lose our human foibles when we gained our powers.” – Susan Storm Richards
Susan Storm Richards is the first female superhero created by Marvel Comics created by Stan “The Man” Lee and Jack Kirby, appearing in Fantastic Four #1 in 1961. Susan Storm and her brother Johnny lived on Long Island until Mary Storm died in an automobile accident. Their father, Franklin Storm descended into alcohol and gambling, eventually serving time for murder so the children went to live with their aunt. When Susan was 12, she developed a crush on Reed Richards and when it came time for her to attend college she followed Reed to California where he eventually began working on an experimental starship until the project lost government funding.
Reed then decided to launch the prototype in the hopes of gaining additional funding and Sue joined him along with her brother and Ben Grimm as its test pilot. When they were in space, the starship was bombarded with cosmic rays with addition of a solar flare which gave the group superhuman abilities and created the Fantastic Four with Sue taking the name Invisible Girl. In the team’s early years, Sue spent most of her time keeping the them together while also discovering her powers manifesting. When Super-Skrull attacked the team, Franklin Richards reappeared and he sacrificed himself to save his children.
Sue eventually married Reed and following a difficult pregnancy, Crystal took her place on the team, but in order to save the unborn child, the Fantastic Four had to take a trip to the Negative Zone to borrow Annihilus’ Cosmic Control Rod. When her son was born, Sue named him Franklin after her father while the child manifested powers almost immediately, but when Annihilus kidnapped Franklin, his powers increased so Reed inhibited his son’s mental activity which angered Sue so she left with Franklin. When Sue eventually returned, she conceived another child who is later stillborn due to giving off radiation.
When Psycho-Man later took advantage of Sue’s state of emotion, she became Malice and attacked her own team but Reed helped shed Psycho-Man’s influence and she eventually turned his own Control Box on him which nearly killed him. Sue then renamed herself Invisible Woman and discovered how to use Force Objects before leaving the team once more with Reed to spend time with their son. During this time, the two worked with the Avengers and the Silver Surfer until returning to the team. Later, Nathanie Richards abducted Franklin into the future and raised him years in the future and he returned mere moments after he was abducted but older, calling himself Psi-Lord.
When Malice attempted to gain control over Sue again, Psi-Lord drew Malice’s essence into himself and disappeared to be replaced by Franklin once more. When Reed disappeared and was supposedly killed, Sue took over the leadership role of the FF and recruited Ant-Man while continuing her search for Reed until finding him stranded in the past and he returned. After their battle with Onslaught, the entire FF seemed to have been killed but Franklin created a Counter-Earth until returning to their own time. When it was revealed Franklin used his powers to rescue Sue’s stillborn baby, it was discovered he had been raised in an alternate future as Marvel Girl who became an ally of the FF.
After a fight with Abraxas, she was restored to her original state inside Sue’s womb who was born Valeria in memory of Doctor Doom’s first love after he helped with the difficult birth. After Doom was later sent to Haazareth, Reed claimed Latveria in the name of the FF and began dismantling Doom’s arsenal until Doom returned to find himself trapped. In order to escape, Doom possessed Sue and then Grimm who Reed killed to put an end to his rival once and for all. Sue then left Reed once again while Reed gave up most of his patents to avoid criminal charges and then asked Sue and Johnny to come with him to Heaven in order to resurrect Ben.
After losing their income, Sue became a teacher and also trained in the martial arts under Iron Fist but when Reed revealed he staged the loss of his fortune in order for the group to experience normal lives, the team banded together again while Sue forced Johnny to become the business manager for Fantastic Four Inc. During Civil War, the team split once again. While Reed supported the Superhuman Registration Act, Sue and Johnny joined the resistance while Ben left the United States for France. Nick Fury provided Sue and Johnny fake identities as husband and wife and during the final battle Reed shielded his wife from a bullet from Taskmaster which severely wounded him.
In the aftermath, Sue was granted amnesty along with the Secret Avengers so she and Reed took a short hiatus from the team. After returning to the team, Sue protected Reed until being subdued by the Hulk during World War Hulk and later, during Secret Invasion, Sue is attacked by a Skrull posing as Reed while another Skrull (Lyja) infiltrates the Baxter Building posing as Sue. The Skrull opens a portal to the Negative Zone and forces the top three floors of the building into it, trapping the Lyja, Johnny, Ben and the kids. After the invasion, Sue is recovered from a downed Skrull ship. After Reed creates the Bridge to explore alternate realities, Johnny, Sue and Ben are fighting off H.A.M.M.E.R. agents until they’re sent to the Hyborian Age where the Civil War is in progress.
After Reed shuts the Bridge down, the others return and Sue tells Reed to destroy the Bridge which he does, but secretly rebuilds it and meets beings from other realities who tell him how he can fix things. Following the death of Johnny, the team renamed themselves as the Future Foundation along with Spider-Man taking his place and after the Reed of another universe arrived, Sue returned to the Baxter Building while the rest of the group fought another Richards. When the team returned, they joined the Avengers and New Avengers in an attack on Attilan until a Kree army attacked New York City so Sue created a force field over Manhattan until she was incapacitated.
Meanwhile, the Cult of the Negative Zone opened the Negative Zone in the Baxter Building and revealed Johnny to be alive who gathered the team. The FF then boarded a ship controlled by Johnny to battle the Kree until the Inhumans stepped in to finish the Kree off. Later, Reed and Sue summon Galactus to destroy the Kree army and when the Mad Celestials arrive to destroy the universe, a future version of Franklin and Valeria appear to help defeat the Celestials. Later, the Baxter Building is rebuilt and the Fantastic Four decide to go on a journey into the stars, leaving a replacement team behind to defend the Earth in their place.
Sue has the mental ability to manipulate ambient cosmic energy to include rendering herself and other objects invisible and construction of solid, invisible force fields. She can also cause all wavelengths of visible, infrared and ultraviolet light to bend around her without distortion. Sue can also mentally project invisible energy produced within the cells of her body to render herself or other objects invisible with the largest volume to turn invisible at a single time around 40,000 cubic feet of volume.
She can also selectively turn parts of her body invisible and can sense objects made invisible by physical means but not magical or psionic means. Sue can project a field of psionic force into a number of relatively simple forms and is able to use the projection of her psionic force to travel through the air. She can also alter the shapes she creates while utilizing them to absorb or deflect the force of impacts and is capable of using her force fields as shock waves.
